2nd Generation ALL that work and nothing changed!! PISS

hey guys

Me and a friend took off and cleaned the egr valve and tube (totally clogged)

throttle body

ISC valve

coldstart injector

and the car still has a reving idle and sputtering on startup plus white smoke

I guess the ISC valve is shot, off to buy a new one. If that doesn't fix it...im not spending

another dime on the car

when I paid 65.00 to have it diagnosed, he said I need a new ISC and the air flow meter

was off on two pins when checked with an ohmmeter. new AFM maybe?

thanks guys for your help thus far.

I'd try to get both parts from a yard.

Check an online store such as www.rockauto.com. See if the part numbers you are looking at match up.

It depends on 3 things
1)auto or manual?
2)was your car manufactured before or after 3/88(Im pretty sure the changeover occurred in March, but I would double check just to be sure)?
3)is it a 4cyl. or 6 cyl.?

They are pretty expensive, so I hope that your sure that the ISC is the problem

Why not take the car to a diagnostic place and see what they think?

Right, I read through the thread so fast that I mustve missed it..

I hope the the diagnostic guy is right then, cause an ISC is an expensive part....not to mention the air flow meter!

No kidding! Maybe he should find out if that's a "guaranteed diagnosis," or perhaps he should seek a second opinion.

take it to toyota perhaps?

how much $$ would that cost

btw the mechanic did indeed diagnose the problem, its a shop that caters to japanese cars too. When I cleaned the IAC, I cleaned all the passages on it, but didn't touch the electrical part , should I have cleaned that too some how?

I'd say no. From what I have seen of IAC's (a whole bunch from a host of companies) they have nothing inside to be cleaned or adjusted. Most have a stepper motor sealed inside using small, non-serviceable parts. The external part on most units, the pintle or valve assembly, is the part that gets dirty. Once that area and the associated passageways are cleaned, you have done your due diligence and it's time to replace a non-functioning unit.

As for cost, the IAC on my 1984 Supra 5M-GE engine cost $325 in 1986 when it failed at only 37,000 miles. In year 2006 dollars, that's $597.51.

Try yard parts, because used parts will reduce regret if the engine continues to behave the same way as before the repair. I have to say that because I don't know the basis of the diag results. Your chances are good if that shop is a Japanese specialty garage.

I once read a thread on here of a guy with a MR2 n/a that actually took his ISC/IAC apart and cleaned it, then put it back together with succesfull results. He wrote that theres these little bearings inside that need to be lubricated as the final step before putting it pack together. You might want to try it since your gonna replace it anyways......who knows
