2nd Generation Abs...

Hello, I own a 1990 2.0L-4 cylinder Camry with an A140L transmission. Is there a code in the VIN or a certain piece of hardware I should look for under the hood to determine if I have an Anti-lock Braking System? When was ABS invented, any ideas? I have stock suspension and stock wheels and tires on it (P185/70R14); Will Toyo tires and 205/55R15 Momo wheels fit onto it without any rubbing on the fenders wells?

Thanks for your time
Nick

I never saw abs on your model/generation, but there is a commonality of equipment for most ABS systems.

If you have rear wheel only abs (many older cars have that type) you will find a pair of wires going to each rear wheel. If you have four-wheel abs, you will also have wires going to the front wheels, and many manufactures use a toothed ring on the outer CV joint as part of a pm generator to sense wheel speed.

On later camrys, the abs is clearly seen near the right side headlight, not far from the alternator. It is a device machined from aluminum alloy with several steel brake lines bending into convoluted shapes and attached to the machined block.

ABS was offered only on the wagons and V6 Camrys of the 2nd generation. In 1990 the Canadian market was offered ABS for the first time, while (as far as I've been told) it was not an option on US cars until 1991. So if your Camry is a 4-cylinder, non-wagon, you probably don't have ABS.

If you DO have ABS, you will definitely know it. With the hood open, look in front of the passenger-side wheel well. There will be a monstrous-looking device with hydraulic brake lines running out from it in all directions. This is the primitive ABS.

This is what it looks like on my Camry:

Actually I skimmed your reply before I posted, otherwise I wouldn't have written such a redundant post!

And monito, you're right...the car has spent most of the winter sitting and I just noticed today that I'm low on ps fluid. Once the rack is replaced it never seems to be perfect again!
