2nd Generation What kind of aftermarket muffler should I install?

The car has newer exhaust on it from the previous owner. It has 3S-FE with 5 spd. I don't want to have (no offence to high schoolers) ricer high school exhaust, I've been there before. I would like to have a more refined sound, like a stock V6 Ford Probe, or a newer V6 Mitsubishi Eclipe. I guess I would call it a Euro sound. I just want to uncork the car, give it a little more than stock. I want a nice lower power sound that fades as it revs. Not the usual rattling rasp of metal as it revs.

I was thinking about trying a Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Single in Dual out. And have two short pipes out the back brought together a little with two chrome tips. So it would have the apperance of a dual tip. Any thoughts?

you will not be able to get that sound with any muffler in your 3sfe camry. the reason why is because the 3sfe is not a V6... a v6 sounds different (more mellowed out) than an inline 4 because its exploding 6 times during a revolution vs just 4 times... you want the v6 sound, get a v6 engine.

you can however get a nice sounding exhaust with the 3sfe with proper usage of resonators and a muffler.

btw flowmaster sucks for muffs IMHO

the HKS high power stainless steel muff sounds very nice, and it wasn't all that loud for me before I removed my cat. the cat does much to muffle the engine noise

It`s pretty clear to me that he`s not after the actual V6 sound but the characteristics with a low deep hum at idle/low speed that lightens up when you hit it. Walker makes a exhaust for the 3S-FE that`s called SoundFX that gives this effect, i have this exhaust system combined with a Italian twin tip tailpipe that gave me the sound i was looking for. I have never been a fan of these "loaf grills" "fartcans" and god knows what other name you have for them.

Well, thank you for your input. Zandro you are correct I'm looking for the sound charactaristics. I understand that a V6 have different valving and will of course have a totally different sound in herent to the design. I am familiar with Walker exhaust. I will look into it, thank you for the picture and the exhaust diagram. Would you have any sound clips you could post?

My last 2nd gen wagon was a V6 and it was loud, especially after I hollowed out the cat. I will never do that again. And it didn't sound the best, I did need more resonators to tone it down. Placement of mufflers makes a difference too. I had a tercel with two trush glass packs (actually a small straight though muffler). One about half way to take out the higher pitch sounds and one in the normal mufflers spot to just bring the sound down a few dB's.

I didn't realize flowmaster sucked so much, that is good to know. I will also check into the HKS set up.

Thanks for the input guys
