Speedometer Cable Leaking Trans. Fluid!!!

For some reason my speedometer cable is leaking trans fluid from the top end that's attached to the dash. I replace the cable and it didn't fix the problem. At first I thought it was because I installed it wrong. The plastic female end the the dash pushes into had a forward and back setting, so I tried both and it still leaks!!

Any suggestions? I can't figure it out.

Thanks.

This happened on my first Corolla about fifteen years ago...the seal on your speedometer driven gear is shot. This means that you have to replace the gear that threads into the transmission, and which attaches to the speedo cable. If you don't replace the whole gear assembly (a small part), it'll keep pumping oil up along the spinning cable--and your feet will keep getting wet. I was unlucky enough to be wearing sandals when it happened to me.

There was a technical service article about speedometer driven gear seal replacement.
But first make sure that the breather on the differential is not obstructed or plugged up.

Thanks for the info. So I need to replace the part that the speedometer cable threads onto? And there's some sort of gear in that area? Do you know what the part is called? Speedo cable gear??? It sounds like I also need to replace the seal. Maybe this comes with the gear I need to replace???

Thanks again.

I would like to reinforce what Doctor J said. I'm making a stretch here but it sounds like maybe if the breather is clogged and you cleaned it it might relieve the pressure enough to keep the fluid from going up the cable. Further, if you do replace the gear and seal (maybe just the seal?) without cleaning the breather the pressure might force fluid past the new seal with the same leak.

Doctor J, any chance you could post that service article?
