2nd Generation Problems shifting out of park

Like the title says...just got into my car after work, started car, now won;t shift out of park...and brake lights don't work. I have read some previous threads on a switch down by the pedal...anybody know where this is or a better solution?

Is the transmission not shifting, or are you unable disengage the shift lock?

The button on the side of the shifter will not disengage...even with the brake pedal depressed.

hmmm...odd. Is your car equipped w/ a shift lock overide? there are 2 versions i've seen. Mine has a button at the top left corner of the shifter. I've also seen a key version.

If your goal is to get your car home and worry about it in the morning, use the shift lock override to shift it into Neutral, start your engine [if you have the key override version] and drive home. Hopefully, someone else knows about this problem and will be able to help you out.

Probably need a new brake light switch. They are cheap, at least, but not particularly easy to change - they screw into a stamped steel mount and usually held by a lock nut.
