An odd one for the brains trust :-)

Hello, all

My mate started my car today.. And it had an odd knocking sound (sounded like my Lancer did when the bearings gave up the ghost) when it was revved then the accelerator let go of (Didn't come close to stalling.. Just dropped to idle)..

I decided to check the oil.. And it was it's usual 'The engine is working OK-ish' brown oil.. But only half way.. So I put a half litre-ish amount of oil in the engine.. And now the oil is to the full line on the dipstick..... But it's all clean..

What's going on?

My 2SE '85 had a odd knock, more like a 'slapping' coming from the top. Thing that was strange was that it started to get worst as it would happen all the time but after yesterday's oil change, it hasn't made that noise. I was due for any oil change but...knock on wood...

Mine normally does it loud-ish (If mum notices it, it has to be loud) on a cold start (until the oil light goes out) then is fine.. I'd never heard it after giving it a bit of a rev though..

Still wish I knew where haf a sump of used-colour oil went

I cant answer about your engine noise but all engine noise is ominous for the future health of your engine. In regards to the color, its a common phenomenon for the color to be different on the dipstick and blacker at the bottom of the pan.

I'm not sure why this happens but all i know is that if i look at the oil on the stick right before a change, the oil that comes out into the drain pan is much darker than that on the dipstick. It really doesnt matter but im sure it pertains to some physical property of the oil, maybe dirty oil sinks more cause its dirty, etc. Its nothing to worry about mate.
