Oxygen Sensor - exists & how to change?

Gentlemen,

1990 Camry with 2-litre. In preparation for an upcoming emissions test, I was thinking of changing the oxygen sensor. But it'll help mileage too.

Question 1 - IS there one on these cars?

Question 2 - is there much more to it than simply finding the thing and unscrewing it from the exhaust pipe and screwing in new one?

Thanks.

Assuming you have a non-CA model 4-cylinder, it is quite easy to change the O2 sensor. It is a Toyota specific part (not the standard screw-in type) that is held on by two nuts, on the exhaust manifold just above the catalytic converter... Hit it with some penitrating fluid to loosen the rust (PB Blaster or similar), wait a bit, and change it out.

There are many other things that could be causing poor fuel economy, so you should also check some other stuff out... (spark plugs, air filter, injectors, ignition system, plugged cat, worn out motor, etc)

Yep!! it really is THAT simple! i just did this last week.
If you have mechanic's gloves, or gloves that can help you tolerate high temperatures, spray the penetrating fluid after it's been driven. once the engine cools down [1/2 hour to an hour] the nuts will come off easily.

and

Before fastening the new O2 sensor in, be sure to use some anti-seize on the bolt.

What makes you think your car needs a new O2 sensor? Is the check engine light (also called the MIL light) on? When an O2 sensor goes out of range, it will set off the check engine light. You can change it out if you like, but if the light is not on, most likely it's not needed.
