Dash pad replacement

On my 88 project Camry the dash pad is cracked. I have a parts rig with the same color dash. How hard is it to replace the soft dash pad? My experience on other cars is that is held inplace by 20 little nuts that would best be removed by my 6 year old son's little hands. I'm looking to turn the rig and don't want to spend a day replacing the dash.

Thanks!!!!!

John

the dash is all one peice, the soft part on top is glued down i believe.

Dash isnt too had to take out, probably take you 2-3/hrs to get both out and back in. Ive done it even without taking the steering wheel off.

Yup, some of the fittings up top are a pain (the windshield angle gets in the way). Luckily glass is transparent and you can still see what you're doing. Using a socket set with a wobble attachment helps a lot, in my (humble) experience.

take the center bracing out, pop the speaker covers, defroster vent, cluster and glove box, take the harness connectors apart, unbolt it from the pipe and pick it up, its not real heavy but a buddy will be a big help

You guys have speakers on the top portion of your dash? On all my Yotas the speakers are under the dash, integrated into the trim. For me there are no "covers" to pop off, you just unscrew the dash trim pieces (the glove box on the p/s, and under the steering column on the d/s).

Any pics of this interesting set-up? I'm curious about how speakers would look on top of a Camry dash.

One of the bolts that holds the lower dash on is hidden below the speaker grill in the lower dash.

After you take the trim panels off the first time, bend back the little teeth so it is easier to remove the next time (you'll know what I mean when you have it in your hand).

Okay, it all makes sense now...I just misunderstood the terminology used. We all have the same setup...and yeah, those little metal clips are tough to get out the first time--if you're not careful you can break the plastic moulding they clip onto.

fredk can you give more detailed instructions on how to remove the dash pad? My dash has cracks and the vents are broken so I need a replacement.

best thing to do is go to a ju nkyard and take one loose that is in bad shape, then pull the one that you want to put into your car, practice makes perfect
