basically i want to replace some items inside to make it look sportier.. i want to put in a racing seat and 4/5 point harness but need some help such as where to drill holes if i have to, whether it will be troublesome with police if i have the racing harness etc.. i also want to replace my automatic shift knob with something..shinier i guess, but i dunno where to find a knob with some kind of button for the OD, or if i can just replace it with a shift knob without the button by doing some kind of mod to keep the OD there..i also want to relocate the horn because i dont want it in the grill..anyone done this before? btw do we need approval from police for doing any mods to our cars such as intake headers exhaust and lowering springs? sorry im a first-time car owner
Edit: forget the shift knob found a really nice one from RAZO..kinda pricey tho still thinkin bout it

approval from police o.O. most likely the answer is no.
RE: racing harness. You have to keep the OEM restraints and use them on top of the racing harness. if you get pulled over and only have the racing harness, you can get cited for not wearing a seatbelt. and yes, it's happened b4.
i don't think it's the police you need to get approval from. It's your insurance company. if ur car becomes unsafe, they may raise your premium or flat out drop your insurance policy.
interesting..my friend has been giving me bad dope then..i had the idea of lowering the ride height and he was like "you need some sort of permit for that"..
well then harness will not be installed..dun wanna climb out of spidey's web everytime i get in/out of the car..still need help with the racing seat tho..
btw, are quick release steering wheels safe and legal?

As far as the seat installation goes (should you decide to go that route), you won't know where the required holes will need to be drilled until you actually have the seat in-hand and can mark the locations on the floor.
i've been pulled over for having a 4pt harness b4... but from what i talked to the cop about.. she told me i couldn't wear it because it wasn't DOT approved, and if i had DOT approved papers it would be fine...didn't give me a ticket

from my understanding, you can legally change your steering wheel ONLY if it does NOT have an airbag. If you're car has an airbag, you can't change it.

can anybody else confirm this?
Yes this is true, but I'm not sure if this is the case in all states. I went through this problem with a vehicle I was modifying for racing. I hadn't made any engine mods, but I had a 4 pt harness, racing wheel with paddle shifters and the majority of the interior removed and custom gauges. I was told by the State Police that given the the Modifications to the interior that the car is not allowed to be driven on the road and can only be towed to each destination.
They said the only changes that can be made to vehicles are future improvements to the vehicle that is either newer or safer to the current model and such features must be D.O.T. approved for such vehicle.
This was in Pennsylvania and I know New Jersey follows the same.
LOL umm considering the state my car is in it does have to be towed to each location anyway (repairs pending) and Ancientwolf13 u said u had majority of the interior removed? what did you remove? because i dont have my rear seat/rear seatbelts, so you can look straight into the trunk from the driver's seat and i took out the carpet, my glove box is gone, cup holders and cig lighter gone, some of the wires are just hangingso i dont even know if it'll pass the next safety check-.- and yea im probably gonna put a quick release hub with a new wheel. gonna be kinda cool to have that..and prevents people from stealing a POS haha
BTW, hmm so far no one has said anything about relocating the horn yet..anyone have that experience? any walkthroughs would be appreciated =)

It wasn't a camry it was my 89 corolla I did it to when converting it to a rally car, but i removed every thing that wasn't needed from the dash back including the rear seats and belts, radio, speakers, and interior door panels. That was when I recieved the info from the State Trooper.
i shall take some pix and ask if you think if its still legal
oh right is the gen2 camry's steering wheel a 6 bolt one?
I just replaced my steering wheel. you need an adapter. you may not need a puller (i didn't need one). the stock housing is a one nut affair, no six bolt about it. stick on the adapter and you have a six bolt hub for most brands of steering wheels.

the only other problem with the harness thing is that to get any extra safety from it, you must attach the back pieces to a roll bar in back of the seat at a certain angle.. otherwise it is actually more dangerous (whiplash and spinal problems may occur in an accident.
i replaced my steering wheel with a replica ebay one as well as with the 6 hole momo adapter (which btw says its not for 91 camrys, but is indeed)
if you want to get a quick change adapter, DO not, and i repeat DO NOT get an ebay one...
chances of your steering wheel flying off the mount while driving with a $30 ebay adapter are probably very high..
