1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just wanted to introduce myself (not sure if there is a specific forum for that).
A friend of mine recently recieved a 1990 Camry (5spd, 3SFE) for free. Long story short is he owns a hummer shop and the little texaco shop that is next door had to shut down. It belonged to one of the guys that was keeping it there and told my friend he could have it and a craftsman box with tools for $1k (the tools/box were worth 2).
The car is kinda dark gray and the interior is a tan/gray/brown tweed type deal. The front windshield was busted out and one of the front control arms was busted and will need to be welded up.
The plan is to make a nasty looking budget drag car. Gut the interior, cut or remove everything that doesn't make the motor run and one headlight/taillights. Replace the front and rear glass with lexan.
Throw a kirkey seat we have laying around and put a nozzle on it. We have a dyno, so we plan to start out small (spray 50 to it) and work our way up to 100 and if it can handle it.
So I will post up some pictures and let you guys know how it turns out. The track closest to where I live opens up in two weeks so it should be together by then.
Also, the interior is in great shape so if you guys want anything interior wise or a/c, heater core, p/s just let me know. Pay for shipping and its yours. (Don't know if you guys have for sale rules or not . . .)

I haven't a clue what will break first . . . trans I guess.
Is it worth making a lincoln locker or will it break anyways?
Not really interested in swapping motors etc.
I already have a POS CRX that burns oil like a champ, A 66 falcon that I am putting a t5 in and an 86 mustang that I am putting together a 427 for (9.5" windsor, C9 block converted to 4-bolt splayed main caps).
The CRX makes 106 with the automatic, the falcon makes 271 with a c4 and a 306 and hopefully the mustang will make 460-470 on the motor with a TKO and who knows with a fogger and a plate.

3sfe engine internals will not do well with turbo/nitrous. the transmission will certainly not hold out with any substantial hp gain. end of story, the 3sfe or your trans or both will break when boosted. not a question of if, but when. most likely quickly at any rate. If you rebuild your 3sfe with stronger internals however, boosting can become an option.
I only mentioned it because it is a budget drag motor with alot of potential given the limit on engine bay size .
The 3SFE motor and trans isn't the best option even when rebuit stronger. By the time you rebuild the internals and trans to support the boost to raise the torque and HP you can spend just as much money and get more power no matter which company the engine comes from.
for me when and if my car can get fixed, ill have my short ram back on and then get headers..anyone know a high flow cat back which isnt loud for the gen2?
and i wonder, rustySFE, how much boost and hp gains are we talking here? i would be real happy to see a 30 hp gain on my car -.- that way i wont have to pant like a dog along with my car going uphill..
why dont you 3SGTE it and swap the tranny instead? might save you some dough considering if u gotta do mods on the engine to prep it for the turbo..

1987 Camry LE 3SFE + short ram, overheating problems and lots of rust
I say, screw trying to make it reliable. Go full out balls to the wall - biggest turbo you can find, big honkin shot of nitrous, boost the crap out of the fuel system with big injectors, fpr and fuel pump. just max the thing out, get some sticky tires tow it to the track, pick a fight with somebody and just blow them out the water. Youll probably only get 1-2 runs before you have a piston shaped hole in your block and bonnet, but itll be hella fun while it lasts.
then, tow the remains home, figure out what blew up, go to the junk yard and replace it for next weekend.
thats how you build a drag car out of a 3sfe camry. dont forget to leave it looking as stock as possible. take lots of pics and video, i wanna see this!

1991 Nissan Maxima SE V6 5SPD - daily beater - Sold
1988 VW GTI 1.8l 16v - weekend beater - Blown engine
2005 Elantra GT sedan 5spd - Woo, no more beatup cars!
Argh... If I still lived in Georgia, I would have been more than happy to take the front seats from you. Mine are REALLY bad. Though I think I could get some good seats from a junk yard for less than shipping from GA to WA.
Have fun with your little project. I too would like to see pics and video!
sell me your shifter/pedals for my 5spd swap if it doesn't work out
Depending on how bad the damage is . . . they might be for sale soon.
It will obviously be a wet kit, and I plan on starting out small and max it out spraying 100 or 125 to it.
I watched the video on streetfire of the guys spraying 150 with a NX wet kit to a bone stock 92-95 civic. Not even a z6 motor, just a junk d15b7. It took the 150 and made ~212 to the tires
What is the base/curb weight of these things? It is a 4 door . . .
oh and I will try to get some pictures up tomorrow morning
