Trim

The black molding under the door that runs down the very bottom of the car from wheel well to wheel well is hanging on mine. There are some clips that can obviously be removed, but the dealer says they don't exist. I even looked at his diagram with him and didn't see the clips, which is odd because I even pulled one out already. Anyone know of another car, Toyota or no, where you can get these trim clips that will fit?

I would recommend removing it completely, cleaning the trim piece and the metal underneath really well, then reattaching it with automotive grade 3M foam tape. That stuff is truly OEM grade adhesive.

I was thinking this route but the clips go on the inside lip of the trim piece. I can't think of how to get tape in there in a way that it's going to reach the metal but not prop the trim off the car by 1/4 inch or so. Do they have any really thin tape like that?

epoxy glue, such as jb weld is thinner than tape, and will secure your trim without any problem.... trust me, epoxy will last longer than tape will too.

If it's anything like my generation 1, those clips are part of the molding. That piece is also pretty expensive. If I remember correctly, I paid about $125 for that molding, and that was around 15 years ago.

No way, and I'd put money on it. JB weld or epoxy will work for a short time, but unless you sand it down to bare metal, it won't stick for long. This 3M automotive grade adhesive will NOT come off a clean surface, I've used enough of it on other cars so I know this to be fact. This tape is not thick enough to throw off the fit of that piece.

OEM grade tape is much more appropriate than epoxy, especially for a long piece of trim.

The only disclaimer I'd have with the tape is that it would require at least a 1/2" wide contact patch with the car. If the trim piece only contacts the body with a thin edge, it probably wouldn't work well. The tape is pretty thin, about 1/16" IIRC. I've not had that piece of trim off my car, so I don't know where and how much it contacts the rocker.

This will take a little bit of work, but take off the skirt completely, sand off any rust spots and fix them with body putty. Gets some small wall anchors galvanized or any rust resistant ones being the expandable kind from any hardware store. Drill a few holes as specified for the anchors to hold up the skirt. Before putting it back up make sure you use sealant on the anchor and in the holes to prevent any rusting from the drilled holes being exposed.

This can ba a permanent or temporary fix to change skirts later depending on how you decide to go about it.

I have done quiet a few of reattachments like this in my racing days

i took both of my side pieces out, and dont need them anymore, i might be able to clean em up for yea, check em out, and sell em for a bit more resonable price then $125 a-piece.

not sure on how id ship em, but lemme know

otherwise id check out a junkyard, and buy em for like $10..

or do as i did, and take off theat piece, bondo the holes, and paint the bottom black...
tho my way is only temporary till i put on a body kit..
