Need help with 1991 drivers shoulder belt

My 1991 Camry drivers side shoulder belt is stuck in the forward position and not returning. All of the fuses and breakers appear ok and the passengers side works well. I manually spun the belt motor to retreive it, then opened the door and the shoulder belt powered forward again, so the motor appears fine. I reversed wires to the motor and got an opposite response - it pulls the belt back to the drivers seat but then won't release forward. The cable and rail are free of debris and there are no "different" noices. It seems like it is a breaker issue or perhaps grounding out - can't find any problem wires though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

maybe the door contact switch is kaput. do the dome lights turn on and off the way they're supposed to when you open and close the driver's door?

I had this happen on my passenger side. I just rolled it back and disconnected the wire for the motor. It has not been a big deal, and my fiance doesn't complain either.

Yup, the dome light switch works. I just talked to a mechanic and he said even though I changed post wiring on the motor to test the opposite direction, he said the motor would still run in the same direction, just that the belt/track goes opposite. He thought it was the motor that needs replacing, which apparently requires the "whole" assembly to be replaced. I not too sure of this and still think it's a much easier fix, such as ground to the door or something. It has to be electrical since the car doesn't get the message to reverse belt direction. Still looking for your expert help out to solve the issue there before I pay big labor fees to replace. Thanks.

I found it! There are three wires (pink, pink, white) in the door jam boot that goes between the door and car body and travels to the door clasp/hitch. when you shut the door, that acts as a switch/relay too. One was broke amd two were cracked. A splice of all new wires fixed the problem. Thank you folks.
