1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
May be better for the drag racing forum but I figured since it is specifically aimed at 2nd gens . . .
Going to the track this friday or the next to run on the motor.
Stripped everything out, cut down the front bumper support, removed the rear bumper support, cut out door reinforcement bars, lexan front windshield, kirkey aluminum seat. Trying to decide if I want to spend another $50 to make the rear windshield lexan.
I hope it goes some low 10s in the 1/8.
Figured it would trap somewhere around 66-67 mph?
I think you guys will get a kick out of my cold air intake . . .

I don't know about the 1/8, but I would expect something around the high 18's to low 19's with it in the 1/4. That's what my 2000 S-10 (4 cyl, 5-speed) ran in the 1/4. Don't recall what top speed was, but it was about as impressive as the ET.
I can't even hazard a guess at what my Camry (I4, auto) would run. I'd line it up against the track maintenance vehicle or maybe a loaded dump truck, but I probably still wouldn't get the white slip.
dang . . . I heard they were slow, but thats slightly faster than a zamboni.
Sounds like it may be closer to high 10s . . .
I cannot imagine it would be too much slower, my 88 crx automatic with dpfi and a 1.5l went 11.20s with just a header and a flowmaster muffler and the d15b2 is only supposed to make 92hp.

Well my 1990 2nd gen camry wagon LE, 3VZ-FE, auto. Ran 17.2 with 2.25 in cat back exhaust, and hollowed out cat, (with straight pipe welded inside cat) as the only real mod. Then I put on a home made CAI with cone filter. Best I could do was 17 flat in the 1/4 mile with a trap speed of 86 mph. Just raced for fun, was slow as dirt, took a long time to get out of the hole, but once I hit 4k rpm look out! This was full interior. So if you have a sedan, and you gut it, with the four cylinder having to rotate less mass you should have an easier time getting it out of the hole. You need to get as much weight out of that car as you can. Put a lighter tank (fuel cell) in it. cut bracing out of hood, trunk. Remove rear drums/brakes. Headlights, front wheel well liners, put in motor cycle battery. Take out A/C, heater core, power steering. Sound system, sound dampening. I even read once a guy only used half the bolts to hold his corolla together. He said there was more that they needed, and over kill. Just a thought.
I checked that 1/4 mile time site. I had an 1985 corolla gt-s (AE 86) and I could do better than what was posted with bad rear shocks...I had to baby them to keep the wheel hop down out of the hole. Best I did with that was 17 sec.
Toyotas seem to be pretty slow, as in drag racing. It seems like the engines are tuned (cammed) for high revs and breath best at 4000 rpm to redline. They always seem to run best on the highway, my gen 2 wagon like to go 80 mph, at 3000 rpm. But I don't do that offen it would get pricy with tickets, and bad gas mileage.
Everything that isn't needed is out, however some things cost money and since I am probably going to blow it up anyways it is hard to rationalize spending any money on it.
Really the only thing worth while that I plan on spending/spent was lexan for the front windshield (since it didn't come with one). I had a kirkey seat laying around so that would have been some change if I had to actually buy one.
I will have to see if a generic motorcycle battery will work . . . I have a 12lbs odyssey battery in my CRX but those are typically $70-80 which I would rather spend on a header.
I wonder how many amps are needed to turn a motor over?
Seems like stock ones run 10.90s in the 1/8 or 17.0s through the 1/4
I have a 1986 mustang that weighs 2730 with me in it, I have a few ideas how to get weight out

The previous owner of my Camry ('90 4-cyilinder 5-speed) ran low 18's in the 1/4 mile before the car was turboed on a track at about 2500 feet.
Since putting in the 3s-gte, I've tried drag racing twice (both 1/8th mile). The first time about 6 months ago, the clutch was slipping the whole time (gear oil from a leak made it slip). This past week I tried again with a new clutch - and busted something else (I think axles, but I haven't looked yet). Ugh.
I haven't done a 1/4 mile race yet, but driven right, the car should be capable of 13's (full interior, with spare tire, full size battery, etc).
Take it easy and don't break anything!

With the 2nd gen GTE swap the best time I've got so far has been 15.1 @ 94 mph on the basket weaves with Firestone Firehawk all weather tires.
On a side note. Firestone Firehawk > BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The firestones grip to the point where I need to rev to 4.5-5K to launch the car with out bogging where as on the BFGoodriches the car would be spinning through first on a soft launch. On the street the BFGoodriches would break loose as soon as the car hit boost in first gear. The Firestones just grip and go, even on wet roads the firstone gives more bite than the goodrich.
I'm going to be turning up the boost probably by next week. I'm hoping to go back to the track and get something like 14.5's at 100mph. Of course if I get a 100mph then I know that the car if drivin properly will run in the 13's. I can't wait for Drag Radials. lol

Here's my camry ^
Current: B+G Springs, KYB GR2 Struts, Erebuni Bodykit(uninstalled), 3SGTE/E52 swap, Crane HI-6S Ignition Box, Crane Timing Retard Controller.
Plans: Here
Well its been a slow process, with school and a small vacation but hopefully I can put the hammer down in the next two weeks.
I recently got a DC sports ceramic header for free and I am probably going to put that on my CRX and cut up the EBAY one that is on there now to work on the camry. The inside of the car is done (stripped) and I really only have the a/c compressor removal left (which requires finding a shorter belt).
Had some 185/65/14s laying around and had another junk flowmaster laying around.
