1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I got my 2nd Gen Camry from a little olf lady about 6 months ago and I noticed that it was shipped to New York from japan and has a J in the first digit of the vin Number. On car like honda and those piles it means they are J-Spec. Anyone know if they are any different than the US version?
No notable differences between Japanese and US built versions that I know of. The J in the VIN designates a Japan built car while a T designates a US (Georgetown, KY) built Camry.
And unless it was built prior to 88, it was built in Kentucky.
Not necessarily true.... Toyota imported a pretty hefty percentage of Camrys, even after the KY plant was up and running. In fact, they still import quite a few, and can be identified by the "J" in the VIN. I believe they're goal is to not have to import any Camrys. The second Camry line just started production in Lafayette, Indiana in the Subaru plant.
Yeah I never said it was a Jap market car I just know it was made in japan and imported over. Just wondering if they did anything do it before. Guess not thanks for the info.
I've noticed little differences between the J-Camry I had and others I've seen in the junkyards. One difference that comes to mind is whether or not the wagon's rear interior side panels were carpeted or not. I noticed a few bolt head sizes that were different, too.

I have noticed that there sometimes can be a difference in the wiper blades/inserts used on Japan built and American built Camrys. Also, the later built American Camrys start with a number 4 in the vin.
In 91 all the Camrys, including the DX models got the color keyed rear bumpers. I really don't know the reason for that, but I can guess it was the last year of the generation 2 model run and Toyota probably had a lot of colored keyed rear bumpers left in their parts inventory. That, or possibly in the last year of a model run it became cheaper to just produce only one rear bumper.
