Help! 89' A/C Problem.

The A/C in my 89' Camry doesn't blow cold air. I figured out the compressor clutch was not engaging. So I checked the Low Pressure Side and sure enough there was no freon.

I bought a retrofit kit from AutoZone and I recharged the system to 40psi. The clutch did engaged and kinda squeeled a bit plus it affected the car's idle. Almost died out but After that it went away.

I ran the car with full A/C but still No cold air. The A/C green light was also blinking. So I checked the Low Pressure Side again...and the Charge was still full. I checked the clutch and its wasn't engaged.

Am I running a bad compressor or is there some kind of switch or sensor that I need to check or replace first? I just got the car...so Im not really familiar with it. I also checked the fuse compartment and I think there are some fuses missing.?

Help me out A/C Experts! What do I need to check?? The previous owner only used the car during the winter. So the A/C compressor hasn't been turned on in a while.

Thanks..Any help is appreciated.

Pure R134A is not mixing with original mineral oil which was used with R12.In addition, the compressor pistons could be sticking.

2 things, what are your pressures when the compressor is running and did you dump the oil in the system and put ester in it, and the dryer will have to be changed

Yeah....I think the pistons could be sticking. The compressor would try to kick in every once in a while and the car would start to idle really bad and then shut off.

I don't wanna risk it. The compressor might seize up on me. And I won't be able to drive the car to work. I'll take it to the shop this weekend and have the compressor checked out, Thanks for the help guys.
