Welcome to the forum!

How many miles on your car? Does it start & idle alright? Any other symptoms? Give us as much background info as you can. There are MANY sharp people here on this forum, and the more info you can give, the more accurately they can diagnose the problem.

You said you just got it up & running.... what was the problem with the engine? Or was it just a few other general repairs to get it driveable?

slow acceleration

yea my bad man.it has 257805 miles and it starts just fine and idles just fine.no smoking out of the exhaust just sluggish acceleration and no power up hills unless you put it in low gear.its an auto on the floor.I recently put a new balancer, waterpump.time belt, rebuilt starter.the vacuum hose was disconnected but I reconnected that and still does it.I think it may be vacuum or egr or at least Im hoping.maybe a headgasket but Im not sure. Thanks guys

Is it downshifting when you start pressing more on the gas?

How long was this car sitting? Was it any length of time? If so, does it still still have the original tank of gas in it that was sitting in the car all this time? Gasoline deteriorates over time unless a stablilizing agent like Stabil is put in the tank, and even then it will only keep the gasoline from deteriorating for about 1 year. Otherwise it can turn in to a varnish-like substance that doesn't burn well and can clog fuel injectors. I have a car that I store during the Winter months. One year I put it away in early November and didn't take it out of storage until mid May. It had a full tank of gas in it when put in storage. When first taken out of storage it ran poorly until that first tank was used up. I refilled the almost empty tank and the car ran perfect again. If your car was sitting with gasoline in it for any length of time I would refill the tank and run some fuel injection cleaner in it for the next couple of tanks.

I had a broken injector once that had a similar affect. Once I got up to speed I didn't notice it but accellerating from a stop was really wierd. I'm not sure but you might be able to pull your spark plugs and see if they all look the same. If one cylinder wasn't working I would think that plug would look different.

Have your Catalytic Converter checked out, it may be clogged/melted/broken down/whatever. If so, I would buy a header for the car, that will help out with the power, and recheck the ignition timing to make sure it's not retarded too much.

91 camry 3s-fe

I have had my water pump replaced recently and dealing with the mechanics, I have learned that the timing belt is critical to my '91 2.0L 4 cylinder camry. The timing belt has to be removed in order to replace the water pump. If the timing belt is not put on exactly as it was before, then, there is definately an issue with slow acceleration in the first and second gear. My mechanic asked me if the car ran correctly after installing the water pump the first time. I said that it was very sluggish. He said that the timing belt must be off by one tooth and corrected it soon after that first test drive. It's a pain to go through, but, I'd be willing to bet that that is the problem if you are having acceleration problems after you replaced the water pump.
