Gen2 Brake Pads

I got some unpleasant metal-on-metal action with my Gen2 today, so I went out to buy some new pads at Canadian Tire. They offered me the $20 econo pads made by "Jasper Brake Products", or the $60 high-end pads.

I took the $20 pads, and saw a notice on the side of the box: "Avoid creating or breathing dust. Contains hazardous substances which may cause lung injury. Wear respirator if used in a poorly ventilated area. Refer to MSDS sheet for further information."

Do manufacturers still use asbestos in brakes? I can't find an MSDS sheet anywhere for these, and you would think that they'd warn you to use a respirator at ALL times, not just in a well ventilated area if they do contain asbestos.

That fine dust contains all sorts of metals and a composite of other materials so that's why they don't want you breathing it, so it's not just about asbestos.

In the USA, manufacturers are required to furnish MSDS info upon demand, not sure in Canada. Call them up or see if they have a website.

Asbestos is still used, wear a mask or hose down the area with water (brakes cold).
