2nd Generation A swap question.

Ok I really doubt this and I haven't seen any info on here about it, but my g.f. is bugging me to find out if the 3SGTE motor along with the Automatic Drive Train from her MR2 could be placed into a 89 camry without rebuilding the whole front end. Some idiot smashed into her car while it was parked and the insurance company totaled the car. The body is too damaged to fix, but the engine and drivetrain is still intact and working properly with no leaks. My parents gave her my old 89 Camry so she wants to attempt it. Another thing a manual is out of the question. She can't drive a stick. She had 2 cars and blew the trans in both of them so she won't go near them now . I told her if it can't be done I'm stealing the motor for my 89 Camry .

Yes her MR2 has an automatic transmission with a 3SGTE. She bought it from the Toyota dealer as a certified used vehicle in 1998. There is no mention of the automatic drive train fitting which is why I've asked, not for the motor. The motor I know will work.

well, if you found something that never exsisted, then yes it can be made to fit. the only difference between the transmissions is the controls are on the opposite side, but it can be modified.

back to the "it never existed statement" yea, from the factory, the 3SGTE did not come with an automatic. if it did, it was a swap from a prior owner, why youd do that...i dunno. you sure its not a 5SFE?

Nope its not the 5SFE its the 3SGTE. It has the OEM valve cover, manifold, turbo, etc etc. As far as the prior owner putting in an automatic maybe they couldn't drive stick like my g.f. . I guess I'll have to take it to a few custom shops to see what they say then. She will only drive automatic. Like I said before if they can't then I have myself a new motor for mine .

Take pics of the motor in the MR2... I have to see it.

The swap into a FWD car from the MR2 is non-trivial, but it can be done. Coolant necks (in and out), accessory brackets, accessories, motor mounts, wiring and transmission shift cable(s) among other things must be changed or modified. At least the motor physically fits though.
