2nd Generation Info about Swapping in a manual for a 3s-fe

I've searched this topic a lot, but I still need some more information before i commit myself to swapping my A/T for an M/T in my 88 camry 3s-fe. Firstly i read that ANY manual tranny from a 4 cylinder camry from years 87-02 will bolt DIRECTLY to my 3s-fe with minor modification...this suprised me, is this right, and if so how minor are the modifications? Because i would consider swapping a tranny in from a Gen 3. Also, when doing the swap, is it possible to lift JUST the tranny out? I've lifted a 3s-fe before but with the engine and the tranny as 1. It doesnt look to me that JUST the tranny will come out, even after removing various things in the way, so my question is can i lift just the tranny out with an engine lift and leave the motor? Finally, would i be able to mix and match certain parts from 2nd and 3rd gen, things like the shift cables and the clutch master cylinder? also would a 90 or 91 or Gen 3 manual ECU work with my 88 3s-fe or should i be able to keep the stock ECU? I know for the Gen 2 almost EVERYthing is interchangable, what about the ECU?

thanks for any help and info you guys can give me,

Jamie

try now to write in a big block.....

yes any 4cly camry tranny will work..probbly mount's the biggest issue
no can drop it out with the car on jack stands
cables will be ok.. but the shifter has to be out of a gen2
gen3 has 5sfe so no won't work
ecu may be but the later model 90-91 did have new sensors so dunno

1. Tranny can be removed by itself, but I find it easier to pull the engine and tranny together.

2. To make it easy; get the shifter cables, clutch master cylinder, etc.. from a gen 2.

3. Leave the ECU alone. The wiring going to the tranny will have to be rewired. Mainly the wiring for the neutral safety switch which doesn't exist on a manual tranny.

Thanks a lot atobe and 88 LE, I read over Jetspeeds whole thread. I'm gathering info to see if I want to attemp this. It seems that it took Jetspeed almost a month to do his conversion. I heard it could be done in a weekend. I also dont have the 6, I have the 3s-fe and figure if I collected ALL the parts im going to need i would be able to acomplish it in a weekend. It seemed Jetspeed had to do some minor modifications to mounts and so on to hold the tranny, would this be one of the problems I may face if I do the swap or does the 3s-fe coupling manual tranny bascially bolt in? What do you guys think? Thanks a lot,

Jamie
