3sfe Power Steering Belt

This is irritating...already finished with the timing belt but can't get the power steering belt back on. I can get the power steering pump to swivel SOME but not enough...it looks like there's still room for it to come forward but it won't budge. I tried to loosen the bolt holding the power steering pump on, (the top one) but it's stuck tight and it's damn near impossible to get anything in there to loosen it.

Does that top bolt need to be loosened? The one that actually holds the pump on, not the one that holds it in its swivel.

Did yours come all the way forward?

If so, how the hell did you get the belt over the pump pulley?

I know it's the right size...I had the old one at the parts shop to check.

The top bolt will need to be loosened to allow the pump to rotate. Apply some penetrating oil or heat, see if this helps. Don’t break the bolt off, as it is difficult to replace. Can you feed the belt over the pulley whilst someone turns the crank pulley by hand?

^ Exactly! You also might try a wrench with very long bar if you haven't yet. That did it for me on all tight bolts on my 2VZ engine.

I made a special tool for the upper (pivot) bolt to break it loose.I pressed 14 mm 12 point socket head (short socket, not the deep one) on the L-shape 3/8 inch allen key (cut to the size). Other "leg" of the wrench is pressed into the 3/8 inch I.D 8 inch long steel tube. This tube is slipped between the pump pulley and the frame rail, then moved toward the bolt and the socket is placed on the bolt's head.If necessary ,the 1/2 inch EMT tube 16 inches long could be placed as a cheater bar. After two 20 degree swings, the pivot bolt breaks loose and the ordinary offset box wrench could work.
When installing the new belt, start on the crank pulley first, and verify it clears the timing scale on the timing belt cover
To tension the belt, I inserted the big flat screwdriver into the tension slot on the lower bracket and just forced the pump away from the engine, tigtening the lower bolt afterwards.
Adding the actual wrench size:
  • the socket is 1 inch long, 7/8" OD
  • the overall lenght of the short "leg" (with socket) is 2 and 7/8 inches
  • the long "leg" OD with tube on is 1/2 inch.

I had trouble reaching mine too. I found out that it was easier to reach with the motor mounts and all out of the way and jacked up the engine an inch or so.

Actually that's where I started because I was doing the timing belt at the same time.

What I ended up doing was pulling it forward, then putting my jack bar on the pump and hammering it so that it swung back...then pulling it forward, back, foward, back, and eventually it came all the way forward. Just for fun I tried to loosen that top bolt again after the pump had given me that much play...nope, still wouldn't budge. But hey, it's together and it doesn't squeal and the belt is now new.

I just PRAY I don't ever have to change that power steering pump...* knock on wood *
