New timing belt, now I have a miss and a light knock
Now what? I cranked it once with the timing off and it didn't idle...set it to what I thought was right, cranked, it idled. So I put it all back together, but on the first crank after I put it all back together, it idles with a bad miss and a light knock. There's also what sounds like a tap behind the knock. Oil is good.
Could it be that the timing is still off?

Chances are youve gotten a tooth off on the timing. Props for doing it yourself though. You will have to redo it and be extra sure you are keeping everything on the correct timing marks.
Did you set the timing per the Toyota procedure? To get a gross look at the mechanical timing setup, set the crank at TDC on No 1 cylinder compression stoke. The rotor should be at the No 1 spark wire on the distributor cap.
After changing the timing belt, always rotate engine by hand two times by hand CW and recheck the marks.
The service info can be accessed through the link below:
No there shouldn't be any damage as this is a non-interference engine - meaning the valves and pistons barely miss coming into contact with each other even when out of timing.
na, no damage to the engine, but if the belt is off a tooth, youll have to take it off again and reposition it. I wouldnt drive it as is with it knocking, but youll be fine once you get the timing right.

Wow, it's a lot easier to re-do it then it was to do it in the first place. I got down to the timing belt in less than an hour, had it repositioned, and cranked it...and the timing seems right now .
Unfortunately that damn rear bolt on the top timing cover was giving me hell...again...and as I was bending the PS hoses back to get to it, one started leaking. So I yanked that off and am going to get a replacement for it tomorrow.
Only problem is, it still seems to have a slight knock. No miss, and it's not a loud tap or anything, just a little knock. I guess this could be from the engine sitting up on the jack instead of correctly mounted, or maybe more noise than normal from the engine because the top timing belt cover was still off...not sure. When I would rev it it wouldn't get any louder...in fact the light knock sound would fade out when it was revved. Hopefully it just needs new oil...that oil is pretty damn old.

I guess it would be better described as a tick then a knock. But it's a tick that I don't hear from my Celica (also 3S-FE) so I assume it's not just a characteristic of the engine.

It seems fine. Idles smooth accelerates smooth...I'm happy with it. I can't tell if it's still leaking oil yet...I'll need to commute in it to see. Anyway, thanks for the help guys and I'm sure I'll be calling on you again in the future!
