2nd Generation auto transaxel loosing fluid

89 Camry 2.0l 3fse automatic transaxel 115k miles. I purchased the car 2 weeks ago, have been working on a fast idle problem. I performed an intake clean, and replaced wires, rotor cap, rotor, plugs. got it running pretty good, took out for long test drive ran good, after getting it home and turning it off, found auto trans fluid running off the trans pan, about 4oz. i have not found where the fluid is coming from, does not appear to be the pan, looks like it is coming from the front by the dip stick, it is pooling where the dipstick case bolts down. The car shifts good, did not notice any tranny problems, no codes.

anyone have any suggestions on a starting point???

Thanks for any help

I am afraid that I am just guessing, but isn't there a breather cap for the transmission? Could it be damaged?

Pooling on the trans or on the ground? The usual places ATF leaks out are the bottom of bell housing (front input shaft seal) of diff seals with the axles come into the housing. Also check the speed sensor located on top of the diff housing. IS the dipstick housing loose?

Check the trans dip stick for indications of a fluid loss. If no indication of loss, might be the diff is leaking. The PS pump also uses ATF fluid.

2nd Generation pooling around dipstick

its pooling around the dipstick, and the other recessed areas above the shift linkage. I have checked the trans fluid while cool and it is still full. Would the trans fluid change colors if it had water in it? It could be the dipstick tube, or its oring. i will drive it some more and get it leaking or overflowing again. It only leaks after it gets hot, and after the car is stoped, and turned off.

I have been reading the haynes cover to cover and found a note under perliminary checks concerning idle speed. I have been trouble getting the idle speed correct, the engine idles fast, and Im still troubleshooting this failure, could fast idle cause the transaxle to overheat, and overflow? Maybe I should rectify the idle speed first.

When water mixes with oil it usually turns a cream/white color and looks like a milkshake. Are you sure the fluid is not coolant, the Toyota and a few other brands are red in color? The idle problem might be the IAC valve. This can be cleaned using a spray solvent safe to use with plastics, do a TN search on cleaning this valve as the subject has come up before.

Toyota service info can be found at the link below.

These problems are not related.
How fast is the fast idle?
Shorten T and E1 terminals on diag.connector.This time you could read the default ign. timing and idle speed .Sometimes the idle up valve for a/c and power steering could stuck open allowing the air to go around the throttle plate causng the high hot idle.
In the transmission next to the dipstick tube there is the rubber grommet seal around the solenoid wires; this thing just pressed and locks into the transmission case. I afraid it may leak from there (assuming it is A140e transmission).
