1st & 2nd Generation (19831986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My '89 Celica and '94 Corolla turn their headlights off when the key is removed and the driver side door is open. The Camry does not. Should it?
If it shouldn't, why doesn't it ding at me to turn them off? I'm going to run my batteries down one of these days...especially without having a real reason to turn the headlights off on the other two cars.
Oh, and the ding-dinger does work as it dings at me when I the keys are in but the door is open.

Every Camry I have ever owned has shut off the lights under these conditions. so I would say you Camry does have a problem. I would download the manual for your year (you don't give a year) and check the electrical wiring diagrams for the headlights.
Er...okay then. On those whose Camrys don't have the auto-off feature, does it ding at you?
And it's a '90 base model, the only Camry in my sig.
I've had a '90 DX and a '90 base, neither had auto-off, neither dinged (that I remember). The only door chime I get is with the key in the ignition in the 'ACC' or 'Lock' position with the driver's door open.
The auto-off is controlled by the "Integration Relay" that is not present on the base model and is not as complicated on the DX model. I've actually looked into adding it to the base model. I might try if I remember to grab one from the junk yard.

Yeah, it would probably be worth it. Any idea how complicated it would be to add? Have you looked closely enough to see if there are plastic connectors just waiting for a relay, and where would it go?

The integration relay is with the fuse box located behind the left kickpanel. I'm not sure if it would just plug into a base model wiring harness, but it should swap just fine from a LE to a DX harness.

Yeah, if I was going to grab it from a junkyard, I'd grab stub harnesses so that I could compare and see the differences in directly. It's pretty hard to tell just from the wiring diagrams.
Really though, it isn't a big deal. In the 6 years I've had a Camry (the DX or the base) I haven't left the lights on... I want the slow-glow interior light!

I'm mainly worried about it because I have a wife and two step-daughters that are likely to drive all three Toyotas...and the Camry is the only one that neither turns its own lights off or dings at you.
