did the $50 rustoleum paint job

Hi, I don't post here much because this is actually my moms old car, she bought it a few years ago from a lady that put a new clutch in it and then drove it into a truck causing minorish damage, we put a new head light in it and strapped down the hood then basically let it sit forever, anyway with gas this expensive she wanted to start driving it (5 speed + 30+mpg = keeper lol) but it needed a paint job so i said i'd try the $50 rustoleum paint job to see how it worked, its not automotive quality no matter now good of a job you do, but its totally presentable in public so its work it imo, anyway on with the pics:

Some old shots from a few years ago

prepping it and what not

painting it and first coat (mixed about 70/30 rustoleum/mineral spirits)

getting there

my brother buffed it yesterday, it wasn't really done but thats another story, its still way better than it was

and as of about an hour ago

It's just compounded now (which is the first step in buffing it after sanding it with 1500 grit, used between 400-800 grit every other coat to remove the orange peel and bugs and dust, 100-150 grit on the initial sanding) it probably won't get polished (which is usually the 2nd step) to remove the compounding swirl marks, hopefully to tomarrow it will be "done" and waxed, still needs gas door hinge and air dam for the front. and new hub caps lol

Friend of mine in high school had a vintage Plymouth (1940's something) which he painted with a brush. Let all the brush marks in. Looked pretty crappy but, so was he.

Does look a lot better than some of the used car lots. How many coats and how many gallons? I can't believe the shine.

wow I've never seen someone paint their car with a roller!!! Looks pretty damn good, nice work.

[edit] you should paint the bumpers the same way

Agreed on the bumpers. I don't know how easy it will be to get the white marks off of them, so just paint them white too. It'll be unique an actually quite clean looking.

I'm unfamiliar with Rustoleum...why did you chose that brand and do they have different colors?

rustoleum i believe is a paint thats formulated specifically to stop rust from spreading any further. it's a brand name paint, so its good quality from what i know, and now from what i've seen good work on the paint. I'm going to be spray bombing my car aluminium colour eventually... I just am too lazy to do so.

WHOA O_O.......

That has a nice shine to it, at lease through the pictures. Simply amazing.

You could always use tire spray on those bumpers to give it the 'wet' look. Thats what I do to my '85 Camry. Pretty nice contract from black bumpers to the white paint. It will take a month or so of constant application before the bumper gets recondition from that 'dry' look. Since they have some paint on the rubber bumpers, might have to sand them down in those areas. For all I know, it takes months before when I had compound on the rubber bummpers...before I used to use tire spray on them.

I've used some Turtle Wax plantium liquid/gel tire gloss on the bumpers. It gives it a very deep wet look (lasts long too), but they stop production of it (places I went to has it on clearance)because it is bit messy trying to put on. It does leave smear marks on the paint when it does get on the paint requiring a dry towel or cloth to remove the smear mark on the paint.

I wondered if you might go into more detail on how one does this. I have three cars with imperfect paint on all (peeled clearcoat on two of them) and I would not mind putting something like this on them myself if I knew more about the process. Thanks in advance and it looks GREAT!

Thanks for the comments, got some 1991 14inch hub caps off ebay that should be here by friday, it's nice driving it around because nobody can tell and when they find out that it was rolled on they are usually really impressed, i never cared for "car guys" (ie mechanics) because i thought thier attitudes stunk but now i understand lol, anyway here's some links on how its done:

Thanks for those links! I'm thinking my wagon is a good candidate for this. Fairly solid body, but peeling/fading badly on the roof.
