2nd Generation Is it easy to change hubcaps?

First off, letme apologize for asking a silly newbie question.

I've a 1990 Camry V6 that my dad gave me. The thing is, it's missing 2 hubcaps. So I've decided, what the heck, I've some money to spend, so I'll just buy a new entire set of hubcaps.

Now, as far as installation goes, is it ridiculously easy? Do I just align it with the tire valve/stem and just knock it into place or is there more to it? What about removing the 2 original hubcaps? I don't want to pay someone to do it if it's going to be a 5 minute job...

That's what I will do. There might be a metal ring around the hub caps on the inside that you may have to put in. I don't have that year so I don't know if it has it or not.

I will use a flat tip screwdriver to pry off the old hub caps.

That is a highly skilled Job .....

First off .... what hubcaps do you have .... what size wheels also. Some V6's came with 15 inch wheels .... the 4's came with 14's. There where also a number of wheel and wheelcover styles. I have seen some of the typical V6 covers on ebay in the last few days.

I've a 15" V6. What do you mean by wheelcover styles?

What they look like.

Pretty much all wheel covers attach to the wheels in a standard way. Pry 'em off, whack 'em on - that's it. I'd say it is just about the easiest thing you can do on a car.

Get any 15" wheel cover that you like. (make 100% sure you have 15" wheels first!)

Here is the link to the 15" set .... they guy says he got them, kid doesn't like so back on ebay .... if you look at his purchases, you see he got them last month and the seller then actually said they were for 15" wheels, which are not as easy to find as the 14" ones. He is also selling them for less than he paid for them. These are the ones I call the Classic V6 style hubcap. They should fit your car if you have 15" steel wheels .... if you have alloys and are missing the center cover, I have seen those on ebay also.

Those look pretty decent for the price. Usually the OEM Toyota hubcaps fetch a bit more than that, especially for a full set. If you want to go the really easy/cheap/fast route, Wal-Mart sells many different styles. The wagon in my sig pic is sporting a set I got at Wal-Mart for around $10.

Just a helpful hint: stay away from the chrome looking ones, they look just plain nasty on any car. Better to stick with the silver ones.

I agree. It just cheapen the car. It like saying, "I don't have money to buy rims so I got these cheap chrome hub caps."

I disagree. On a car that already has chrome highlights from the factory (my gen 2 Camry), I think the shiny wheel covers look good. I also think they look good on my '94 Corolla. IMHO, anyway.

Thanks for everyone's responses.

I tried to pry off the wheel covers using a screwdriver a few days ago, but it's definitely harder than it seems. I know for a fact that there's a pry bar in the garage somewhere since I remember my dad using one to take off the hubcaps on his accord. i'll see what happens this weekend.

Yes, they may be a bit difficult to remove with a screwdriver, but it shouldn't take TOO much prying to pop them loose. Start at one point, then gradually work your way around the wheelcover in 3 or 4 places prying a little bit at a time. OEM wheelcovers generally hold on tighter than aftermarket ones.

If you DO happen to go chrome, just please don't get the spinners.

The factory tire iron should be used for removing the hub caps. On the 14" caps, there's a notch for it, and probably on the 15" as well.

Yeah my wheel covers were a bitch to get off, they were fused onto that rim! lol I broke one of my covers trying to get it off. I guess a tire iron is the way to go, not your bare hands. Anyways, I took mine off and left them off because the steel wheel underneath looks so much better IMO when cleaned up.

Actually, cheap hubcaps are very easy to install once you relize how to properly adjust them to get the right fit.

Most of them have a wire that has to be adjusted to get it on tight enough. This will keep them from falling off. I put on a pair of $15 Wal mart specials in December, and they still haven't fallen off, and are easy to get on and off, like when I got my tires rotated two days ago.

I'd would go with chrome, as the look better and don't show scratches as bad.

Check mine out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Picture_1548.jpg
