90 3SFE Auto Engine Replacement

My 90 3SFE Auto Camry is blowing a some white/grey smoke from time to time. I would definitely like her to have more power, but I'm not willing to dump a crapload of money into it at the moment. However, it strikes me that one junkyard engine usually costs about the same as another, so if I do replace the engine, what would be the best option for a drop-in replacement (not having to fab mounts or parts) for me to grab, change all the rubber, and slap in for long term reliability?

The obvious would be a 2VZFE. I'm assuming that would bolt right up to the current ECU and trans, right? Or is there another quick swap option that would make more sense?

no it won't bolt up to the 3sfe ECU/mounts... another swap you can do is the JDM 3sfe can probbly cost you 500$ for the swap

But I could snag the ECU and mounts from the junkyard and just put them on my car, right? I still wouldn't have to fab anything.

unforunately it's not that straight forward for the ECU... your harness might not match up to the v6 harness... do you want your cluster and ac to work right?

it's not that mounts are different it's in a different place.

5s-fe.

Bolt up your manifolds/electronics to it, and BAM 10-15 more horsepower and a much newer motor (probably). I believe it has been done before.

Ressurecting this thread because my engine has officially bit the dust. I've tried looking for the 5SFE but I can't find any in any local junkyards under $1000. A JDM 3SFE makes more sense unless there's some other cheap option. I'm not looking for huge power...just figuring that since I have to replace the motor anyway it may as well be something better than what it had. Where would I find a good JDM 3SFE? I'm having a hard time locating one online. Suggestions? Other swap suggestions would be fine as well.

On an engine such as that, what maintenance would be good BEFORE installing it into the car?

Actually I found a 1988 with a good 3SFE that runs fine for $650, so I'm going to grab that and have some spare parts, too!
