Power windows and door locks dead on '90 Camry

Gentlemen,

1990 Camry wagon, 2.0-litre.

All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the power windows don't work and neither do the power locks. I've pulled and checked all the fuses under the hood beside the battery, and checked several that made any sense to check in the fuse box at the driver's left foot, all OK.

This happened once before when I took it in for a smog test. Drove it out of the garage, opened the windows, stopped the car, and suddenly, no power windows. The garage mechanic took it back in and looked fora few minutes, then announced that he had found a fuse, or something, in a bizarre location, and that had been it. Once you know where to look, it's trivial, I recall.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You may want to check the wiring from the fuse box to the driver side door.

It's probably time to re-wire the harness in the drivers side door. Every time you open and close the door it causes the wires to flex and they break after time.

As for the fuse you are looking for, it's actually a 30 amp circuit breaker next to the drivers side kickpanel fuse box.

I am with es250nut. However, since it is affecting so many of the functions it is likey one of the two ground wires (I believe that there are two). Open up the door panel (gently or you damage the hidden fasteners) and run new grounds to the switch panel. You can pull the kick panel off on the inside and insert a flexible wire through to the door and pull one or two wires through. Before you go to the trouble just try connecting a ground straight to the ground terminals of the switch (without trying to snake it through the wiring holes) and see if that solves the problem. If it does then you can try to snake the wire in. Don't snake too big of a wire as it will put more pressure on the old wires in the holes and they will break. A new harness would be best.

Follow up for reference: Yep, I opened and closed the driver's side door a few times, thereby flexing teh wire harness, and, presto, everything started working again. Until next time. Guess I'll have to look into it...

Thanks everyone for your help.

Sounds like it's time to open up that loom of wires and find and repair the wires that are broken. Otherwise, the problem will come back again.
