2nd Generation PLEASE HELP! 98°F and No A/C!

Recently, my A/C has stopped working. I noticed this a month or so ago. I went to turn the A/C on, and the little green light didn't come on. After some searching, I found that the A/C Fuse behind the pass. kick panel was a blown 7.5A fuse. At the time, I didn't have any 10A fuses, so I replaced it with a 25A ( I know you're not supposed to...)

It seemed to work for a while, but then I would notice that the air wasn't as cold as it normally was, look down and the little green light was flashing. Finally realized that the clutch on the compressor was disengaging when the light blinked. Also, I swapped the 25A for a 15A fuse, and it's been blowing the 15A fuses so I put the 25A back in for now.

Now it's at the point where I push the A/C button, it idles up and the clutch spins for about 5 seconds, then it cuts out and starts flashing. I've tried at idle, stopped and revving the engine, and at highway speeds, all with the same result.

To my knowledge, the system has never been serviced, so I'm assuming the original R12 is still in there....

What are the most likely causes for this? (I have not yet checked the pressures, as I am unsure how to.....is it easy for a DIY'er?)

You just post this message. It's going to take time for someone to reply back.

That car is old and I think it needs major A/C work on it. As the other poster says, you may need a new compressor. It won't come cheap though.

Bring it to the repair shop and have them take a look at it. I recommend someone that specialize in working on Toyotas.

Sorry for the impatience....just dreading the 1.25 hour trips home after work.

I took a better look at things last night...

When the button is pressed, the clutch starts to spin a little, but it slips and quickly quits. With the engine off, it is moderately difficult to turn the center of the pulley by hand. I also peeled a thin layer of black crusty crap off the ID of the pulley, which looked as if it may have been clutch lining..

I haven't had a chance to have the pressures checked yet, but you guys seem to think this is likely the compressor itself? If so, that SUX! I'm not sure if I'm down with sinking $500-$700 in this car for A/C when I still have other problems (hesitation in lower RPMs).

If that's the case, I may be taking bids soon....
