Cracked Dizzy

So my distributor is officially toast. Considering all the rubber and plastic on it though would it really be a good idea to go the salvage route? Has anyone done it and not had it fail again in a few years? Thanks for the input.

The pin that is pressed into the shaft ( for drive fork) is hard to remove even after using bearing heater and shop press. I've seen some remanufactured distributors on the junk cars, however they are allready leaking oil from the shaft bearing.

Took me ages to get that pin out and I ended up breaking it. I took it to the machanics and he got it out with 3 hits with a punch and a vice.. I couldn't believe it.

Okay, I would've thought the shaft came with the new (or used) distributor. I guess not. So would you guys suggest new or used? Looks like new is going to be about $160 and used is going to squeeze just under $100.

You could rebuild your current distributer, buy a new or used one.

Could you explain in more detail what part of your dizzy is actually cracked?

I chose to rebuild mine, and it was a pain in the a$$.
If your planning on keeping the car for a long time then a new one would be the way to go, or rebuild. However if your planning on not keeping the car for much longer grab a second hand one, I can normally find em for under $50 on ebay.

Also new vs rebuilt yoursef, at least you know the new one is going to work 100%

I'm planning on keeping the car until the wheels fall off...and considering it's not even hit 200k miles yet, it should be good for a while.

Is the coil inside the distributor? Because the parts store says it does not come with the coil...

Now that I have the coil seperated it appears that it is what is cracked and leaking. The dizzy looks okay, but the coil is in pieces and the o-ring was shot. Looks like it's a new coil and O-ring for me.

This is pretty common on generation 2's. Most develope a very fine crack that is hard to see but still shorts itself to ground inside the distributor in any damp/wet weather. Your's sounds like it was much more obvious. I got an aftermarket Borg Warner coil some years ago for my niece's 91 at Pep Boys for around $40. I'm sure it's a bit more today.
