89 camry 4cyl accel issues

help me diagnose. my camry seems not to pick up speeds under 2k rpm. the harder u press the gas the slower it goes. but when the rpm reaches 2k rpm, the car boost like crazy. sometimes getting on highspeeds it wont pick up untill maybe 3.5k rpm. this is not normal.

Yes, ignition system... timing, plugs, wires, cap, rotor or ignition coil is most likely.

My money is on the ignition coil, but any of the others could cause problems too.

Did you ever resolve this? Mine started doing this same thing just after the ignition coil was replaced. Wires are new, but I'm going to do the plugs/dist cap, rotor, and a trans flush this weekend.

no i havent. the used coil i put in was a genuine toyota part as well. i prob might swap it back to my old one. maybe its bad. if it doesnt work out, im advancing the timing.

Did anyone else use a Borg-Warner coil?

Another thought...did anyone mess with the little adjustible strike plate thing in the distributor? How is that supposed to be set?

I afraid it may be caused by the catalytic converter you put in. My cat is beginning to lose its efficiency only 3 months after installation.

according to the haynes guide i've got it was supposed to be in the same place it was before it was unassembled. i think i put mine in the right spot but i can't be 100% sure. who knows what happens if its off by even a little bit.

striking plate? is that the little 4 fins that is suppose to be magnetize? i read the haynes and its suppose to be certain inches. mine is alittle larger.

Doctor J: i dont think anyone talked about cats so far. im thinking of straight pipe all the way through i have extra oem header with middle pipe and i gutted the cats already.

Well, my Chilton's didn't say one way or the other, so I put the plate as close to the fins as possible without them actually touching. That made the car run really well...but the coil died later that day. I put it down to a bad part...maybe I destroyed it? I need to adjust it back to that now that it has a new coil and see what happens I guess.

Perhaps you are barking up the wrong tree here - i'd start with the basics

1. Check compression. If it is as expected (i think at leat 160, manuals in general forum are down), then you ought to be able to fix this. If you have low compression, then the answer is, unfortunately, new engine, valve job or new car.
2. Check fuel. Changed the filter lately? If so, maybe fuel pump is weak (although usually they just quit with no in-between)
3. One or more injectors dead? (If it idles fine, then they are probably ok.)
4. Clean throttle body. If you have manual trans, at your milage, it is likely the TB is worn out.
5. Is the timing belt too old? Its possible it could have jumped a tooth or two.
6. There are many other possibilities but perhaps the most likely one, since you didnt say mileage, is maybe it is just worn out

The problem with all of this is that this problem seems to be consistent with having replaced the ignition coil, regardless of other maintenance.
