Difference in Igniters?

I have a '91 Wagon, 3FSE. My igniter has 153 on it. The other day, while browsing at the junkyard, we cam across a wrecked Camry, that I think, was an '88. We grabbed the Igniter off it to have a spare, in case it is ever needed. (Been having some ignition problems, but it turned out to be the coil this time.) Anyway, we get home and start comparing the igniters, and the 'new' has 511 on it. When we grabbed it, I really didn't have any idea what number was on my current one. So...the question is...are the 511 and 153 igniters compatible? Or should I not take that chance?

Did you pull it from another 3SFE? Check an online parts sources such as www.rockauto.com to see if the part numbers are the same both years.

Looked like a 3FSE...

I have replaced the water pump, timing belt, a couple of coils and found a shorted fuel injector wire that was popping one of the big fuses right by the battery, so I've been under the hood a few times....and when we looked at the car in the junkyard, it looked like my motor...lol....but I am not 100% positive. Guess I'll have to go back and look at the junker more closely.

Puzzling thing, though....looking at rockauto.com, (nice site btw..tks for that), the ignitor part number is the same for all the gen 2s. Since the one I pulled has a different number, it really has me wondering..

Part numbers on Igniter

Okay...an update on the part numbers on the two igniters I have.... Went outside and did my best upside down reading on the igniter on the car. The igniters have 3 numbers...one is the Toyota number, one is the Denso number (assuming), and then the big number.

Igniter on the car...

Toyota 89621-32010 Denso 131100-1530 Big number 153

Igniter from the junk yard...

Toyota 89621-32010 Denso 131100-5111 Big number 511

Since the Toyota numbers match, it would seem that the igniter should work on my car. Sound like a good guess?

Looking at RockAuto, they list a Control Module for the ignition...looks just like the igniter. Is CM another name for the Igniter?

Nears as I can determine the CM controls the igniter. It is connected to the igniter and distributor. Both CM and igniter appear to have the same number of wires. But the CM appears to have a Red wire running to it, the igniter a White/Red and White/Blue wire (based on Gen_2 data).

If the Toyota P/N is the same, perhaps Denso just upgraded the part and changed the prefix number.

Control Module...?

I looked in the IGNITION PDF file that I have, and it doesn't mention the Control Module...I'll have to do a visual on the car.

I agree with you on the part number theory. Gonna keep the 'new' one...just in case I need it one day. May even try it while there are no problems with the car to verify if it is good.
