3sfe Jumps to 4k at startup

hi everyone,
I have a 88 3sfe camry stick shift. Recently, as soon as i start the engine in neutral or in 1st gear, the RPMs jumps to about 3k -4k RPMs...and after a few seconds, i get the smell of burning oil. it happens wether the car is hot or cold. I was thinking it thinking throttle body or MAF?

any suggestions? I hate for it to jumps that fast from a cold start.

Thanks.

Check IAC valve, might need cleaning.

Does it go away if you quickly press the acc pedal? Does it happen when you stop and start the car at normal operating tempreature?

Other then the IAC, I'd also check the throttle body and give it a good cleaning with carb, fuel injection, or brake parts cleaner.

Throttle body could be sticking as a result of carbon buildup.

Also check your throttle cable. Mine was binding at one point causing it to do something similar. I wouldn't worry about the burning oil smell until you figure out the throttle problem...that the car is burning oil when it's revved up to 4k when it's cold is not at all surprising...or good for it.

No, it stays the same if i tap the accel. pedal. or it will go upwards to 4k. it does the same cold or at operating temp.

I did clean the throttle body with STP throttle body cleaner. just replace the TB assembly w/ the accompanying Throttle position sensor and IAC?

any other suggestions?

update:

ok, so, i tested the iac valve, and cleaned it and the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. but it did not help.

The Iac tested within specs.
the cold start injector was also within specs.
i didn't test the throttle position sensor 'cause it required tools i didn't have.

so, i just replaced the entire throttle body with the accompanying iac valve and TPS. and now, she's purring at about 700 rpm!

Thanks to all those who helped!

$75 for the TB, IAC, and TPS? Not bad!
