2nd Generation OEM Rear Speaker covers

1990 VZV21

Is it possible to remove just the OEM speaker covers without having to remove the rear shelf?

It was mentioned a couple of years ago, but the person that responded custom built a rear shelf.

basically, i want to replace the rear speakers, but use the OEM speaker covers.

I was thinking about goin with these OEM replacements:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-JqvW9Hm...0&I=130TSG1341

That or the 6.5" equivalent.

yup. i have the v6 version of your car. and i put in 5.25" JL VR coax's in the rear w/o removing the rear shelf. fyi, if u buy from crutchfield you get the entire mastersheet, headunit, front and rear speakers on how to disassemble. the rears are cake, the fronts are very hard.

Hey Jeff, can you give a quick overview on how the fronts are done? I've tried a couple times (unsuccessfully) to pry off the front grilles, but I didn't want to break them so I gave up. Really need to replace the speakers though.

cool!

I think i'm just goin to get the speakers from Circuit City and the brackets from Crutchfield.

How do i go about removing the rear covers? from inside the car? or from inside the trunk?

I can write up the fronts as soon as I locate my Crutchfield MasterSheet again. It's *complicated* to say the least. I was going to replace them for the time being and ultimately decided fabbing up door pods was easier, ha ha. I'll post a write up on my system once it's done.
You can get to the rears by simply popping off the cover/grille and unscrewing the speaker. Be careful! You're dealing with old plastic that most likely has baked in the sun over many summers. If you get SAP adapters from Crutchfield they will give you the MasterSheet for free -- I did the exact thing when I put in my JLs. 6.5s may fit there but I did 5.25s. You aren't gonna boom or even get decent output from either size in the rear deck anyhow.

The covers just pull off. Theres a clip in each corner.

6.5" speakers will fit. http://toyotanation.com/forum/showpo...8&postcount=16

The front speakers are a PITA to get to. It requires removing the lower dash pieces.

I don't know why Toyota chose to put them in the dash, its a stupid spot for speakers.

Same here.

Sounds much better then the crappy stock speakers and jacked up location.

lol...

At lease the Gen1 speakers were easy to get to (one screw and grill comes off exposing speaker) for both the front and rear (managed to get 6.5" without moding anything. Can't screw them on tho). My Gen3 Cressida front speakers are similar to those of the Gen2 camry, needing to take apart the entire front lower part of the dash to get to them...

Why in the dash, whhhyy toyota >.<

I started taking apart the rear of the wagon today to get to the speakers back there. That also requires a lot of disassembly to get to. Decided it was too hot & muggy for that project today. I really gotta do the fronts in both cars though.

Can you get to the passenger side front speaker if you remove the glove box?

As 88LE said, that's definately a jacked up location.

I think the passenger side might be the harder one...at lease on my Cressida. I took off the bolts but it still didn't budge. Maybe there was more...

Gotta replace mines, speakers are blown.

Maybe if your a contortionist.

IIRC the speaker on the passenger side is bolted to the lower dash piece.

A 5 speed swap is starting to sound more doable than a speaker swap.

Ok fellas, HomeGrown in particular, here's the write-up I promised:
Per the Crutchfield MasterSheet:
" 1. Remove panel light dimmer knob and remove the 12mm hex nut from its shaft.
2. CAREFULLY!! snap out the "dummy" panel to the right of the dimmer switch and remove one 10mm bolt from there.
3. Pry off speaker grille and remove one 10mm bolt exposed by grille removal.
4. Pry out black trim insert located to the right of the steering column. Remove one 10mm bolt from this location.
5. Remove four 10mm bolts from driver's side lower dash panel (2 each side)
6. Remove two phillips screws from cover panel on underside of lower dash trimpanel and remove cover panel.
7. Remove three phillips screws and remove speaker enclosure
8. Disconnect speaker wiring connector. Remove four phillips screws and remove speaker.
9. Connect speaker wiring adapter (if applicable) Only two screws will be used to mount replacement.
10. Reassembly is up to you. Leave it ghetto and buy more crap from us here at Crutchfield after you get frustrated and stab your Snap-On screwdriver thru the dash. (smile) Have a faaaantastic day, we know we are! "
Hope this helps. Like I and others have said, it's NOT WORTH IT. Do door speakers.
Jeff

Did you ever do a how-to on these door speakers? They look very very nice. Waaay better than my ghetto install (although mine is stout, tons of deadener)

No, but theres not really much to it. Panel is 1/2" MDF with a small piece of 3/4" MDF glued on top.

3/4" piece is sanded down at an angle and bondo is used to fill in the gap and blend the 1/2" and 3/4" pieces together.

Using a router and straight cutting bit, I routed out a section for the grill to sit into. The grill is then wrapped with grill cloth.

Thanks for the write-up Jeff & 88LE. I *MAY* attempt this, only because speakers are cheaper than the parts for a 5 speed swap.
