Exclamation Brake Pad Question

Hey guys,

I have a quick question regarding brake pads for my '85 Camry. I went today taking apart the brakes to get to the pad. After getting to the pads, I noticed the old pads had holes for the anti-squeal spring thing while my new toyota genuine brake pads didn't have any holes in em for it.

Do I need to have that anti-squeal spring? Is it needed? Maybe wrong brake pad part? Was it a design 'change' that now it doesn't require it? I went and installed them, It fitted fine and when I drove on residential areas with that side done (i didn't do the other side due to this), it braked fine and what not. Just that it doesn't have that anti-squal thing on.

I need to install the new rotors too but they are so freaking rusted on. I plan for now just to change the brake pads and just change them again along with everything else after I get my CV axles and some other things. The CV axles both sides need to be replaced (clicking) along with several front end suspension components so might as well do that all one time.

Thanks.

Thats what I figured out.

Anyhow, I ordered another set from toyoda and this time when I get it, I will check to see if it has holes. My uncled order the set I am using now some 2 years ago, so the box is mostly gone (it got a bit soaked). I said hell with it and the next set of brake pads will come in tomorrow. I'll make sure it has holes.

The CV boot is torn, joints knocking and clicking. Been like that a few years already. Told my uncle about it few years ago and he didn't do nothing. He plans to dump the car this year and buy me a small Hyundai/Nissan but I'm against it since those cars are too small and the Camry is just right.

I did a price estimate on some parts I need for the front end, comes up around $750 altogether. Small price to pay for something that has been so dependable.

Darn right. Even though I don't have nothing against Nissan or Hyundai, for my personal choice I would go Toyota all the way. My uncle is a cheap skate. He's just worried I'll be stuck on the side of the road with it on my (to be) daily trip to college, about a fair 30~40 miles to and from.

The car needs axles alright...along with some other suspension parts. The right side is quite loose at best. Argh, I'm just hoping those CV joints will last until I can sum up the axles.

Oh yea, update on the brake pads. I ordered the newer set of em and there was a paper in the box saying that the anti-squeal spring is not needed. I guess i'll use that set of brake pads I got when I some how sum up enough money for a overhaul on the suspension part of the car. So I got new pads (not the ones I bought but the other previous toyota one) and did a bleed on the brakes. Man, was that bottle sure like chocolate coke

Anyhow, thanks for the help
