1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am the second owner of this 1989 Camry, 4cyl 5spd.
it has been up to date to my knowledge.
im new to imports.
what do i need to know bout this car that may save me money in the long run? for maintenence and thigns like that.
i would like to do performance suspension upgrades, motor upgrades. all that good stuff.
i would prefer links if possible.
nice camry. the paint is looking good on your. How many miles on it? You might want to check the timing belt. and just do a regular tune up, check spark wires, distributer cap and rotor. all that stuff. make sure your spark plug gaps are good. Engine mods on the 3sfe aren't all that much. You can do headers, and exhaust. Intake, you can get a better filter element and that helps a little. Suspension, intrax springs, kyb gr2s are the best you'll get without custom. Engine swap is always every 2gen owners dream... 3sgte is the engine of envy. Strut tower brace for the front you can steel one off a 90 lexus ES250... really cheap, and perfect fit. that's the easy stuff...

welcome to the forum.
130k on the clock. i waxed the car once 2 years ago for the previous owners. any sway bars?? do they have rear strut bars?
also is the 90 es250 a higher end camry?? like can i steal parts off one and they should fit?
The ES250 shared a lot of similar components as the Toyota Camry Gen2 LE V6. Of course more then what it had. They both used the same V6 engine from what I know.
These cars (Gen2) are very hard to kill as long as proper fluid changes are done. With that said, the only time I usually see a Camry on the side of the road is either from a snap belt or flat tire.
Welcome to the board! 3S-FE's are die hard engines as long as you address any oil leaks. They do like to leak oil for a Toyota motor, but unless it's the rear main seal the leaks are fairly easy to address. At least yours is a 5-spd...that'll help with performance more than any mod to an auto 3S-FE!
Very nice looking car, too. Hopefully ours will be in that shape soon.

whiteline makes bigger sway bars for the car. and superpro makes poly bushings. no rear strut tower but if you look at your rear deck where the speakers are it kinda acts like one if u think about it.
you can steal any parts of the es250 and it'll fit. you can even change your whole interior to wood and leather if you want.

Except for the interior door panels ... they are longer than the camry's. I already tried . Oh, almost forgot: Welcome to the forum .
n00bs take note: THIS is the way to do it. Post pics of your car in your first thread!!
i am on a bunch of other forums so i know the basics.
btw the name comes from my other car. The color of it is Bright Aqua, and the model is an SE
it is a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix. and it is the reason i bought the camry. (trans blew out for the second time.)
Yeah, those are pretty...one of the best looking cars GM has ever made IMO. I only wish the faster ones (GTP's with the 3.4L DOHC) would've been reliable.

sad thing is.....mine was faster stock...then i did a topend swap which is heads on up from a newer gm 3400, gained about 25whp and then started pulling cars on the 3.4 DOHC cars.

Wow! I should've kept my '94 Grand Am GT and done that.

In the way of the bigger sway bars, I noticed a big difference, between night and day in my opinion with the fatter whiteline sway bars. i really like em, they helped a lot even after having the intrax lowering springs and the kyb gr-2 struts.
although after 4 years of the bigger sway bars, the lower control arm bushing the sway bar fits into was coming apart and replaced with the superpro poly bushings. the poly bushings work great!
