Australia Temp Gauge Fail and Overheat 87 Camry

Hi Guys,

I think Chucks will enjoy this one. I too have had my Camry try to overheat on a number of occassions. System has been pressure tested. No Milky oil, no water out the exhaust. Generally running well.
But when I got the car the heater core was disconnected. I reconnected it (after the first overheat). Now I find that the windscreen tends to fog up when using the de-mister setting. My water levels in radiator and expansion slowly go down.
I guess I am answering my own question, and it may be the heater core that is suspect.

But to add to my fun !!! I had the garage go through it all with no success. At the same time they fitted a secondhand tow-bar. Since when my temp gauge has not worked.

I remember reading sometime ago about dash indicator lights being affected by faulty wiring in the loom at the rear of a camry. Could my temp gauage problem be due to the electrical fitting of the towvbar ???

Any ideas hints or humourous answers will be appreciated.

Driving up to Sydney tomorrow to see Bob Dylan so I hope the old banger doesnt overheat on the way.

Cheers in advance

Nick

How difficult would it be to disconnect the tow bar wiring? If it went back to normal it would be certain that that was the problem. However, if it still didn't work you might be looking at something in the wiring that damaged another part.

Australia Not getting very far

Hi Again,

still no further in tracking down the water temp gauge fault. Any tips on methods to check it out ?

Also found a leak in the A/C radiator, is this fed from the main engine water, would it explain why I am loosing water.

Thanks in advance

Nick

the AC doesn't have a radiator it has a condensor which has no coolant it in whatsoever. try replacing your engine coolant temp sensor for the hell of it anyways

my temp gauge is reading what I believe to be accurate (the needle passes over the E in TEMP) then randomly pegs wayyy past H (as in hot) for a few minutes, then back to normal, and back to pegged... any ideas on this? I also have a really small leak in the radiator, I don't think it's a big issue at the moment- but- I thought an air bubble might be causing the inaccurate gauge reading.

Australia Sometimes its best to deal with it yourself

Hi Guys,

found the problems after getting a workshop manual....so...

reason for temp gauge not working.....garage mechanic had left it disconnected (he spent 4 hrs trying to solve this !!).

Loosing water, down to heater element leaking....so have bypassed it for now.

Chev your temp gauge problem is more likely a shorting of the temp gauge wire....check how bad the wiring is looking.

As fro this thread I am happy for it to close now....

Cheers
Nick
