Australia CV Joint Troulbles, Need Advice?

I've noticed over the last 3 weeks my car has been making a clicking sound when going around corners slowly and also when braking I sometimes also get a clunking sound which I think is related as I get the same sound also when turning sometimes.

I'm pretty sure its coming from the drivers side CV Joint, the question I want to ask is how can I verify this and be sure it is the CV Joint and if it is will I need to replace the CV Outer Joint or the whole driveshaft? Or is there anyways I can test to see if its the Outer Joint thats causing the noise?

I had a look today also at the CV Boot and it seems fine but I will have a closer look tommorow, however I have not noticed any grease leaking out of anywhere and I check the engine fairly often so I think its just worn over time.

CAR:
Type = SV21, 1990, 3SFE
KM's = 305,000km

Jack the corner of the car up till the wheel is off the ground. turn the stearing to full lock . spin the wheel manually and listen nice and close. you should be able to pinpiont the noise fairly easy.

The outer joint is non-serviceable- replace the axle assembly.

I dont know how they sell parts down there in Oz so i'll just go with the way i'd do it here. You wouldnt want to rebuild the outer CV on the drive axle and leave the inner one alone, even if it sounded ok - as it is probably just a matter of time til the inner one goes too.

Your car has got a lot of klicks (km) on it and i doubt there's any point in trying to rebuild the cv's. It requires a lot of greasy work, and a whole bunch of tools i'd never even dream of owning, along with a rebuild kit that has new bearings as the old ones are probably toast. So the way parts are priced here, it is just cheaper and easier to replace the whole axle on one side (that is, the drive axle that includes both inner and outer cv's) , the other or both with a remanufactured one - especially if you are planning to keep this car for a long time.

I'm planning on selling it in a few months, so not looking to spend hundreds on getting this fixed. As far as I know the CV Joint from eBay listed above comes with all new bearings etc..

I'm not sure it is the CV Joint now, as I've put the car up on stands, turned the wheels to full lock both ways and rotated and I cant hear anything..

I've also just driven around in circles both ways, and reversed around in circles.
And the whole time I didn't hear the noise at all..

However I would say the noise comes and goes daily, so it might not do it now but a few hours later it probadly will start again.

Well the sound is defferently from the front drivers side, happens sometimes when driving at low speeds and turning, sometimes when brakeing..

Could also be a loose brake caliper bolt or missing brake pad support spring.

Since you are planning on selling it soon, i think i'd just repack the bearings with the cv's in place. Cut the clamps and peel the boot back, assuming the boots are ok, just give the bearing assembly a good cleaning with carb cleaner or brake cleaner, clean them as best you can with a rag and compressed air if you have it. Let it dry thoroughly. Then just stuff cv grease into the bearings until it wont hold any more then add a handful more.
You may be able to use large hose clamps to hold the boot on when you put it back together, or even large twist ties. Whether you warn the buyer of this problem when you sell it or not is a discretionary thing i guess.

I've been curious where to find CV joint grease.

Check those and they all seem fine.

As for repacking the CV Joint I may try that when I get some time, is there a particular grease to use? or is there a CV Joint grease specially made for the job?

Also the CV boots on the passenger side looks fine but the one on the drivers side is starting to develop a weak spot as it looks like a crack but it hasnt gone all the way through yet, so replacing the boot would likely be a good idea. Which brings me to my question.. Can you buy the boots seperately to put on there?

I believe you can just buy the boot and replace it.

Thing is from what I heard, it is a pain in the you know what to do.

Drivers side CV shaft has been replaced, figured it was best to replace the whole shaft.

And....

Still getting a clunking sound when accelerating from a stop and braking hard, it feels like the body of the car is still moving slightly after the wheels have stopped. The CV shaft did fix the clicking which was getting worse, so it appears to be two separate problems.
