my car vibrates like hell and im trying to inspect the motor mount and i notice my 89 camry engine (passenger) side motor mount is different then my parents 88 auto. did these change in 89+? the 88 model seems to be easier to take out because its facing side ways and my 89 motor mount is facing upwards.
i tried lifting the engine up and its lifting the whole car up. i dont want to take or loosen the other mounts, is there another way?
To remove a motor mount, just put a piece of wood between the jack and the oil pan then jack the engine up by the oil pan until it lifts the engine just a tiny bit. Then remove the mount. That simple.
Diagnosing motor mounts is pretty easy too. Have someone put the car in drive, hold their foot on the brake, then rev the engine slightly. The engine should move up a bit but not much. If you have a motor mount out, it will move VERY noticeably, and probably lopsided. Also have them go from reverse to drive at a low speed wihle you watch the engine...that'll make it move around a lot too if there's a mount out.
Couldn't tell you whether they changed mounts from year to year.

hows ur mount sitting like? i notice urs is a 89 as well?
i had a flat wood on top of my jack pushing the oil pan. the whole car goes up while jacking it. i took the front mount bolt out and i rock the car to sit lower but i wouldnt. should i try harder?
it wouldnt be possible to get the mount out if the engine is not lifted or pulled out. my mount doesnt look like any other camry 4cyl out there or my haynes book. is it because its manual trans?
I didn't have a problem with my 89's mount when I did the timing belt, and it had the spacer and bracket. I didn't have to "lift" the engine per se...just put just enough pressure on the bottom of it so that I knew it was supported.

Don't forget, there are several motor mounts. When you jack the engine up there is weight on the others (holding the body up or down depending one how high the jack is) even though you have disconnected the one that you are working with. I have never done this but I wouldn't expect more than a 1/2" or so of movement once you disconnect just one motor mount.
kep, im thinking i might have to go under the car and loosen the one on the firewall as well. my bottom one is gone. i loosen the front but made no difference. the car is not jacked up but the engine is.
SO the motor mounts from 89 will not work on an 88? Is it just the orientation that is different?
Also, have you guys mostly bought the generic stuff at napa/autozone/kragen/advance auto parts?? Anybody had problems with this stuff? At this point, I don't even want to know how much the dealer probably wants.
heres the deal, you have what is called a hangar mount on each end of the trans/motor asy. to hold the motor in the car and you have 2 twist mounts in the area where the trans meets the motor down low, one in the front thats easy to see by the bottom of the radiator and another on the back crossmember that is pretty hard to see. these keep the motor from rotating under load, if you have a bad vbration out of gear its probably a sagging hangar mount and if it only does it in gear its most likely a twist mount probably the back one
88 and 89 have different mounts, i think. my parents 88 has different mount and i went to Toyota and they printed me a 89 4cyl engine mount side and it is the correct one. they quoted me $103, -30% already included. if im keeping the car for sure ill buy it.
fredk: i replace the rear mount, front mount looks fine, and also tranny mount is fine. vibrates from engine side and the bolt that is suppose to be bolt down by the mount is not going in. the mount is done and the engine is sitting on the frame. i just cant take off the mount and wondering if theres another way around with lifting the engine up.
