Gauge fuse blows when shifted into gear

My son has a 90 Camry with auto trans, shifter on the console. When the shifter is pulled into gear, it blows the 7.5 gauge fuse. This fuse appears to affect many things (windows, auto seat belts, temp gauge, over drive ect...) I have opened the console but find nothing obvious. Elec. manual does not seem to I.D. shifter elctronics. Any ideas what to look for???

Suggest you look at the shift indicator switch on the trans shift lever and the wiring. Check for shorts. The fuse connects to this switch which is used to select and power the shifter lamps on the dash.

If the fuse blows only in reverse, the back-up light circuit could be shorted to the ground or it could be short inside the light bulb itself.Remove the back-up light bulbs and check if fuse still blows. If yes , check the red wire for shorts to the metal. On station wagon check the condition of rubber between the rear door and the body.

O.K. so far I have checked the bulbs and wiring on the reverse light. This part still looks new, very clean. I removed bulbs and reinstalled. I have also unpluged one of the wire harnest clips that run to a black box for the shiter on the console and appear to control the the indication lights and allows the shifter to move when the brake is pressed. Now at this point the fuse has not blowin. I will use the car for today and if the fuse does not blow, I will plug the harness back together and see what happens?? I will follow up later, thanks for your help!!!

Check the backup light wiring going from the cars frame to the trunk lid for damage.

Hello again, Well so far the fuse has not blowin for two days. Yes this is good but i,m still not sure why. I made the misstake of not trouble shooting one thing at a time. I had disconnected the harness on the black box controling the shifter electronic and did not plug it back together to confirm this was not the problem before going to the back up light and messing with them. I,m thinking at this point, back up light were the problem?? I am not convinced the problem is fixed completely but will have to wait and see. Thanks again for the advise. I will update again if and when problem pops up again.
