3SFE Camshaft removal -service bolts??

WHat is the purspose of the (2) small service bolts the repair manuals says to use for camshafts removal? They screw into the cam gears. I removed the cams without using the bolts? Did I damage the head?? Are they just to pry against to rotate the cams to the proper position?

On the exhaust cam there is a spring loaded sub gear that used to take out gear backlash and reduce whine and knock in the cam gears; the screws are used to hold the tension spring at pace.

So what do I do now that I have taken the cams out without the service bolts?
