Code 53

Hey folks. I got a Gen1 Camry '85 that is giving me Code 53. I tried looking in my Chilton's repair manual and a quick search here, but i can't find a list and the camry manuals.com is no longer allowing downloads for manuals due to...

Quote:
Due to a user making over 48,000 attempts at downloading not only the same file, but the largest, we have been penalized by our advertisers.

As a result of this, until this matter is rectified, all downloads will be suspended.

We regret this action, but it leaves us no choice as revenue from our advertisers was the sole means of support for the site.

Anybody knows what 53 means? Thankyou

for '85 there are only 7 codes

code 5: Oxygen Sensor Signal; diagnosis: open or short circuit in O2 sensor signal; Problem areas: O2 sensor circuit, O2 sensor, or EFI computer

code 3: Air flow meter signal; diagnosis: Open circuit in Vs or Vs - E2 short circuited; Trouble Area: Air flow meter circuit, (Vb, Vc, Vs, E2); Air flow meter, EFI computer

Really?

Hmm, no wonder when I first turn the key (with pin shorting), there was 3 flashs. Soon after a slight pause, there was 5 flashs then after about 2 sec pause, it did the 3 flashs. I was wondering if it was 53 or 5 and 3.

I suppose I might as well change the O2 sensor since that would be one of the cheaper (I believe) things. not sure how to tackle the code 3 though.

Any ideas how to clear the codes? I know you can with an OBDI scanner.

Again thankyou!

change the O2 sensor, then pull out the EFI fuse to reset the computer. or simply unplug the battery for about 15 minutes.

edit: pulling the EFI fuse is how to reset the EFI computer for gen2. I'm assuming it's the same for gen1

also, wait for the CEL to light up again b4 tackling the code 3

Okay, thanks. I know the pull battery cable will clear code.

Also quick question. The O2 sensor is a bit pricey for a generic. Should I spend the extra cash on the Genuine or will the generic be okay?

It is, if my memory is correct. I think the manual said remove it for 15 seconds and then reinstall it.

I went w/ a Toyota OEM [Denso i believe] when i did mine, and it ended up being about a little over $10 more than the Autozone brand.

Okay thanks.

One more question though, I can't seem to find where it is mouted. The Chilton booket is next to worthless in this part. I can find it on other engines, but the 2SE is one i can't seem to find the O2 sensor...

I feel ya on that one. when i tackled the O2 sensor problem, i thought i had to take the top end apart like doin the spark plugs [my engine's the 2VZ-FE].

Anyways, if the layout is the same [exhaust pipe on the passenger side] trace the exhaust pipe to the engine. it should be located between the catalyst and the exhaust manifold. On my car it was accessible from underneath. you may have to remove the front right wheel to get a good look at it.

Hope that helps.

Alright, Thanks. I'll jack up the car and what not to see if I can see where it is.
