Problems with 85 Camry

Hey guys, I got a few problems with this Camry I have. My most recent problem and the one that makes me the angriest is I just bought some tune up parts (spark plugs, rotor, cap, and wires). The car was running good, I had just replaced the water pump cause it was leaking and making a horrible growling noise. I put all the tune up parts in and the car wouldn't turn over, just the clicking from the starter. Thinking the battery may be dead (old battery) I jumped it and finally got it to turn over. It took forever to start and a huge white cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust. It just ran really poorly after that. Just farted at about 550rpms. I put it in gear (automatic) and give it some gas and instantly die with a harsh thump. Anyone got any ideas? I'm getting really frustrated with this car.

That should be the 2SE

Do you have the spark plug wires in the right order? I remember my dad having his one in the wrong order and it was awful. Any odd noises when it does start? I remember when my distributor cap was making some contact with the rotor, it had an 'erring' sound which kept stalling the car when put in any drive gear.

Yes it is the 2SE. I will double check the order of the wires. It did have a funny noise to it but I think that was more from it being bogged down... I thought today I would replace the old parts and see what happens. Thank you.
