1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 88 Camry (stock) has a 650cca... swapped in the 530cca that came in my Jeep when I got it and put the 650 in my Jeep... thinking being a little car it didn't need a big 650. Well it started sometimes and needed a push (or a hill) to start the rest of the time.
I swapped the 650 back in and all is well once again but damn, that's a lot of juice for a low compression, small disp. four cylinder with no real demanding electrical load to speak of (not even foglights and a higher power deck).
So, I was wondering what everyone else was running in terms of their juice boxes/batteries.

From what I have seen, the Camry (and maybe other Toyotas?) have very sensitive starter solenoids. Mine sometimes doesn't start on the first turn of the key, even with a fairly new Group 35 battery (the big recommended size). Then I turn of a few accessories and everything works just fine. If you really care, you could probably wire in a beefy relay at the starter solenoid input to get around the problem. As it stands now, the current for that solenoid runs through the ignition switch and looses voltage on its way around the car.

wow i researched the red top optimas and never found the 910 figure. that's a lot of juice. are u sure that isn't cranking amps, not cold cranking amps?
i live in arizona so our heat kills our batteries. CCA doesn't mean much to me as we rarely have a sub 30 degree morning in the winter time.
do u happen to remember what group size you bought for the optima?
it saids BCI group 75/35 if that's what you'r talking about... bad thing is your battery bracket doesn't work cause it's shorter by 2 inches... so i had to zip tie it to the car

I am looking at the Red Top Optimas. Did you get the one with the reverse terminals or what? They now come with spacers that you can use to give the battery some lift. Let me know if you have the part number because my battery just died on me due to prolonged storage.
Later,
Matt

4 cyl 1991 Camry LE ... if you own a 2nd Gen Camry talk to me about the modifications you have made or wish to make... lets help eachother out
I'm basically now in the market for the most powerful battery we can stuff in our engine bay. 90 camry le with the 2vz-fe engine. I had a Kinetik and it didnt fit. I would relocate to the trunk, but honestly I think I would mess something up; if there's a write up on how to do it (safely, correctly) I would try it and then just get like the biggest Kinetik or Optima I could.
So is the consensus that the Optima Red Top is the best? It still doesn't seem to fit that well from what I read here. What about the Exide Orbitals? I just barely heard of these.

matt that was the same reason my battery died... i didn't get a reverse pole one.. i had to extend the + a lil bit but that was about it... i'm fine with zip ties... it looks much cooler
model # 7586DT part# 75/35-OR i'll get you a picture later.... well the yellow top has more CCA than the red... it's rated at 900 and 1125CA... i got the red cause i have a system and it lets you run it longer w/o killing the battery than the yellow top.
