Grip the nut under the banjo fitting with an open end wrench and put a pipe on a breaker bar for leverage to remove the top nut. It helps to remove the bottom part of the filter first and do this on top of your engine.

I'd spray it with some liquid wrench or PB blaster and let it soak for an hour. Then try. My bolts were on there so tight that I ripped the bracket that holds the filter to the frame....it was a mess. I also ripped the top of the filter apart as well, trying to get that top nut out. I thought I ruined my fuel system but I nurtured it back to working order--somehow. So spray the crap out of it before you start, keep a good eye on the bracket that bolts the frame, you don't want that to bend or break. Also, make sure the top of the fuel filter doesn't start to deform if you're having a hard time getting the top bolt off. Finally, keep an eye on your hard fuel line that connects to the bottom of the filter--make sure that doesn't break or pinch as you work with it.

I know I'm probably making it sound like a scary thing, but just take your time and keeps your eyes open and it'll work out.

actually just get a open ended 19mm wrench, and slide that under the black bracket from your picture, and use a closed ended 17mm wrench on the top bolt, make sure the direction of each wrench is for loose the bolt, then squeeze the two wrenches together, that is the best way to loose the bolt, don't rely on the mouting bracket or anythign else. do the same thing for the buttom bolts, but use the flare 17mm wrench.
and don't forget to pull your EFI fuse, otherwise, you will probably have the gasoline shooting because the fuel system is pressurized.

+1

Really spray both the top and bottom of the filter w/ PB Blaster. The top nut is not much of a problem, even if it's rusted on. It's the bottom that's a b!tch because you can't see it. Plus you don't want to bend the fuel line.

g'luck

Stain: BTW i like the new look of TN! Not too extravagant of a change, but enough to catch the eye ^_^

fuel filter removal problem

I ended up stripping the nut on the bottom of the fuel filter for my 92 v6 xle tonight. I tried to use the flare wrench after a regular wrench was not working, but it stripped the nut more. I even tried using vice grips. Is my old fuel filter there to stay? Do I have to rip out the fuel line if I need to change the filter? One thing that occured to me just now. I have been trying to unscrew the nut that is about a 1/2 inch under the actual filter, but the bottom of the filter itself has a hex shape like a nut. should I be trying to unscrew the filter by unscrewing the filter itself/?
