91 Camry Fuel Door Release cable broke

Hi, I have a 91 Camry, and the fuel door release lever just stopped working. I took out the trunk lining and was able to pop the switch by hand, so I could fill up but I would still like to fix the cable itself. I took part of the back seat and back flooring out and was able to access the cable that releases the latch, and when I pull on the cable itself it does open the door. Does this mean the the cable has just been stretched over time and needs to be replaced? If so, where's the best (read: cheapest) place I can get one, and if not, what else should I look at?

Thanks for any help

You should see if the cable is actually broken or if it's just stretched. If it's streched (even if it's broken, too) then you should see if you can just do a custom re-adjusting like cut the end off the cable and re-tie it to the lever so that it's taught again. I would at least attempt to do that rather than just go out and buy a new cable when you don't really have to.

Most often the cable jacket at its end breaks off. If there is enough space available you can put a splint around the cable, fabricated from metal channel that is clamped to the cable jacket with small hose clamps.

Thanks for the replies guys. I pulled the cable from the front seat, and it started working normally with the slack in the cable being under the driver seat as opposed to the slack being farther back. Seems kind of weird to me, but it's working so whatever... lol
