hi all,
was just lookin back thru some old threads and found this one: 3s, 2vz, 3vz free power, OH MY!
can people who have tried this mod on a 2nd gen 3sfe without any other major mods please tell me if it is worth it and how many 'clicks' to move the wheel.
ok, I did this to my car and notcied an ever so slight difference. I moved mine 4 clicks lean as you'll see in the picture, the car runs a bit better, but i have a feeling i need to re - check my timing, I heard the gains were more noticeable if you re-time your car after you do this. Toyota has the car set to run rich (which gives you more safety and is probably why these motors last so long) ask a turbo guy, run it rich and your safe, run it too lean and your going to grenade a piston. Also toyota also runs their timing of the gen 2 camry at 10 below top dead center, I heard if you take it down from anywhere between 12 and 16 BTDC (16 being big maximum) you might see a difference, i dont know for sure yet because I havnt tried. Good luck and dont run it too lean because it'll start pinging, also remember to reseal the platic cover over the afm when your done, to avoid moisture getting inside.
i put mine 4 clix lean and it had more vibrations than before and an idle surge between 900 and 1000. so i put it bak 2 stock, shud i have gone further than 4 or is it the more u go the more u rumble??
we'll first if your going to know if your car is running ok after you play with it you have to make sure there are no other interferences, Im talking like dirty plugs with a worn electrode, so with a big gap (gap is 45-47 normally) i think, dirty fuel filter, dirty air filter, basically anything dirty that might cause the car to run abnormally. When i did this to my car i checked all the that beforehand to rule it out if the car ran bad. I tried going 4 clicks lean and 4 clicks rich, the lean worked better for me. then i tried going further lean and the car started running bad, pinging like i mentioned, i belive the term is predetonation, anyways 4 clicks lean did it for me, but as i mentioned you might want to rechcek your timing, this "afm mod" goes hand in hand with ignition timing. It could be why your car ran rough when you did it. Did you take it out for a spin, let it run for a while? I heard the ECU may have to adjust itself to the newly intoduced setting, it takes a few minutes, just a thought...
something really important i forgot to mention, MARK the STOCK position with a tiny permanent marker dot so you can use it as a reference, especially if you lose track of how many clicks you turn the cog.
i did mark my original position cause i moved it back to that now. i don't want to go all out and get the timings done, but as i read ur post ur saying to get the best out of this mod u should change ur plugs and such? i took it 4 a 40min drive so i think that was sufficient.
thanx

change that stuff if it needs to be changed. If you take the plugs out and see that their quite toasty, in any color and the electric contact is rounded off, its time for a change, and then every 12,500 miles after that.
The air filter, hold it up to a bright light, if you have a hard time seeing past the dirt, change it
If the car accelerates normal and doesnt have an odd idle or hesitating problems, the fuel filter is probably still good. but you should still eventually change it, there is no OEM specs that I know of for fuel filters, the manufacturers expect them to run forver (or they expect you wont be cheap and use costco gas, we all do it) I say just the fact that you change it is something.
I'm just trying to figure out why you can might have ran funky afterwards, this AFM thing did work for me, but with no spectacular gains. it doesnt help that im driving an auto either... I say check out your car, tune it up if it needs it and you'll notice a difference, nasty plugs and a blocked fuel filter would be a bad combination.
I did this without touching the timing on the car, I'm waiting until my uncle bring me his timing light, its been a while im waiting, then I'll see if there was any real gain. You dont HAVE to re-time your car, i just heard it produces better results.
as i said at the top of this thread, ive got a cold air intake that i havnt installed yet. So i will wait until i have done that before i try this mod again, i am also gettin ngk iridiums (or howeva the hell u spell it) 2morro aswell, fuel filter is a-ok.
i have had this mod done for a while now and it is worth it. You have to fiddle with it to see what kind of compromise you want between performance and slight problems such as rough idle (which was solved by increasing the idle speed by 100 rpm).
