2nd Generation Check engine light on

Hey guys, I've got a problem. My check engine light is on. It came on after I cleaned and gapped my spark plugs (.043") and checked some vacum lines (which were all ok as far as i could tell). When i was done i started the car then let it idle for a while, when it was warm i took it out and pushed the RPM up to about 4500 before i let it shift, then i noticed the check engine light was on. What could have happened? The car runs fine, starts fine, idles ok (dips ever so slightly, i think the injectors need to be cleaned) and has its normal amount of power. I thought maybe i pinched a vacum line or something when i was checking them and it would trigger the light. So i tried unplugging the battery to reset the ecu and dump the codes. I started it back up and within 2 seconds the light came back on.

I'm stumped and I had a look at the camry manuals, there is no troubleshooting problems section. What could have happened? I've had this car for over a year now and this is the first time the light has come on

It didn't fix itself. You need to pull the diagnostic codes [aka ODB codes].

To do that you need to jump terminals E1 and T, turn the ignition switch to the on position [w/out starting the engine] and read the CEL blink patterns.

If it disappeared, chances are you have a code 71. I have a code 71 and it comes on and off every so often.

Code 71 = Problems with the EGR system. Most of the time the problem is fixed by just cleaning out the EGR valve. Do a search on the GEN 1/GeN2 forum for Code 71 and/or EGR.

If you're Gen2 is a 2vz-fe, i can help you w/ the removal process, otherwise there's plenty of help for the 3s-fe.
