When my 88 Camry is in reverse the "R" (just below the instrument panel) is not backlit.

Remove the gauge cluster and you should be able to access the gear status lights. They are lit with tiny bulbs that can be found at a junkyard. There are two different kinds of bulbs depending on the year though, that's what I found.

i just switched a bunch of them around. i figured that i'm rarely on 1 or 2nd gear, so i swapped those 2 for the O/D light and the D light that burned out on mine

2nd Generation Removing Light Cluster

How difficult/tricky is it to remove the cluster? Anything I should be careful not to do?

well you have to remove the gauge cover to get to it.. remember once you taken out the 5/6 screws pull it out a lil bit and unhook all the electrical connection for the hazard/defog/cruise first don't keep yanking like it's not there... the PRNDL has a lil more slack cause it's on the bottom.
