1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So time has come and I sold the Cam on CraigsList Yesterday....Im sad to see her go. She ran so good, didnt even burn a drop of oil at 147K! I got asking price for the car($750 USD).....the guy I sold it to had a 91 Cam LE V6 with over 300K before it died on him, so he's a fellow Gen2 guy and knows the value and reliability of these cars regardless of miles or age!
The clutch was getting a little iffy, so I decided to go to the dealer auction and get something else. I also get bored of cars after a year or two. My dad's a dealer, so luckily I have access to the wholesale auctions.
Well, to make a long story short, I picked up a 2001 Nissan Altima GXE 5 speed. I tried finding a MR2, but those car are hard to find these days.
The Altima seems like a good car, it uses a timing chain rather then a belt, which is always a plus. However, the Camry's build quality is quite better than the Altima.........
I will still stick around and help you guys out with Camry stuff where I can......I owned two Gen2 Cams in my life, so hopefully I will be able to give input where I can.
Late 90s Altimas used to have jumping timing chain, not sure about 2000-on.
the 2000-2001 Altimas dont have that issue.....
I havent gotten the title yet from the seller and they have 2 weeks to come up with it, if not, I can give the car back and I might just do that! Ive noticed some things that are bothering me and I might reconsider given the opportunity.....The car is peppy though and Im getting fonder of the styling(it took some time getting used to it)
I decided that Im gonna sell the Altima......the more I drive it, the LESS I like it....they are built like crap!......Hope to pick up another Yota. When I was at the auction I bid on a Corolla and a 99' v6 5 speed Camry LE(very rare indeed), but to no avail, I was outbid....I even tried to pick up a 03' Matrix, but the prices were skyhigh!
You see the problem is, I only like 5 speeds and they are not so easy to find.
Yay!!!!!!!!
I bought a 1996 Cam 5 speed 4 door today with only 109k one owner car!
Gen 3 Cams are pretty rare with a 5 speed. The only thing is that the car does not have cruise control and I love cruise for long trips....but Im gonna buy a kit or put factory cruise on it from the junkyard, just wieghing the options.......
As for the Altima....... Im selling it as we speak. It's a fun and peppy car to drive (155hp stock), but it's nowhere near as good a car as a Camry.
.......So Im back, but Ill be hangin more on the Gen3 side of the forumfor the most part.
But Its good to try new things "you don't know what you got til its gone" as they say.
Out of the big three(Toyota, Nissan, Honda), Nissan is definately at the bottom of the list.
To be honest, the Altima I bought is a clean well taken care of car, but nonetheless, still not as quality as the Camry. The one big issue is the car spent all of it's life in Vermont, so all of the suspension components, and brackets and exhaust is pretty much rusting out......if I drive the car in the city for a year, Im sure I will be spending big bucks on repair.
The clutch on the A/C compressor is on it's way out as well.....never had that issue with any Yota I have owned.
From what I hear, the only good Nissans are the Maximas and Pathfinders.....But I think the 300ZX cars circa 1995 are sweet.
