2nd Generation Blower motor resistor questions

I did the search and read what was out there. It was hard to follow, it seemed like no one got it to work. I was wondering if anyone had any luck soldering ceramic wire wound resistors in place. If so what wattage ended up working. And the few guys that tried and didn't have any luck, did you put the resistor pack back in the duct so air was flowing across it?

I want to save money, and it would be easy for my to solder in resistors, but I don't want a fire hazard that will burn down my car. If it is that risky and no one have had luck with fixing a broken one I will just spend the money to get a new one.

I've tried the 5 watt ceramic because they were the highest wattage to still fit. Installed and could smell the burn shortly thereafter. Got a cheap one from ebay but it had the wrong housing so I swapped the bad resistors. Think it could be done with ni-chrome wire as it comes in various diameters and resistance per inch but if you have to by whole rolls it's probably too expensive. (This is the same stuff used in toasters and electric dryers so if you have an old one you could experiment.) Think most are .4, .8 and 1.5 ohms.

I tried it too when I had my gen2. The fix lasted a couple of weeks, but I lost the low speed settings again. I bit the bullet and got a new one.

I did shop around, a lot of Toyota dealers that sell their parts on-line offer lower prices than your local dealer. I got mine from a Toyota Dealer in Indianapolis.

I went to the junkyard and rummaged through all the Blower Motor resistors in all the Camrys until I found them with a medium and/or small coil intact. Then I took my wire cutters and cut them off the resistor. I did this only because I couldn't find a Blower Motor resistor that was entirely intact! So I found one that had a good medium coil, cut that off, then found one with a good small coil, and cut that off. Tomorrow I am going to have both coils soldered onto my broken ass Resistor and I will get back to you guys to tell you all how it worked out.
